Thread regarding GlobalFoundries layoffs

Lesson learnt

I was laid off recently. Came as a surprise to me because I was under believe that no one can touch me and I was indispensable. It is sad and hard to believe but it happened.

I was busy with my project day before and worked very late evening as usual in spite of sickness and cold. I was confident that I will survive as I had great rapport with director and above in my department.

Here are FOUR lessons i learnt from this and wanted to share as there are still some in GF who think they will not be laid off soon. I was like them during last 7 nm pivot.

  1. Short term pleasures can lead to long-term traps.
  1. If things are coming easy and you are getting comfortable, you are getting trapped into survival mode.
  1. When you are not using your skills, you will lose more than your skills. You lose your CHOICES.
  1. The right Action has to be taken at the right time, or else you will lose whatever you

An old timer told me when I started out in this industry almost 3 decades ago to always treat everyday you are at work as if it is your last day there.

wake up ... what i read here ... everyone is too comfortable to move out of their comfort zone and thing that they are "safe" aka indispensable ... sorry to say .. no one is ever indispensable in a company , yes they might struggle initially when you leave .. but the company will get itself back on its feet with or without you.

always be paranoid , and start finding out your worth in the outside world , you need to compare other non dollar benefits - career prospects , locality if you are laid off how quick can you get back on your feet.. sad to say .. Malta NY has no other semicon companies you can fall back on , unless you join the vendors .. and then again vendors life/work are a different story ... CNSE - SUNY , GE , which other company in the capital region comes close?? none

While you are correct you are missing point of most of these posts

This is true at least in the US. We are at will employees that can be fired at anytime for any reason as long as it does violate one of the protected classes (age, race, religion, etc.)

And you are right this true everywhere (in us). But the big difference between Globalfoundries and Amazon, FB, Intel, etc. is they don’t perpetrate a false system or narrative as blatantly and confidently as Globalfoundries. Let’s be honest, Globalfoundries straight up lies to us all the time about nearly everything. Sure the other places did too, but to the degree and magnitude that is present at Globalfoundries. At Globalfoundries everything is a little shady. The other places here and there you uncover some odd things, but not everything. It’s not the same. GF force feeds us inaccurate misleading statements on nearly everything. Some you can choke up to incompetence (roll out of international ipo purchasing - aren’t we a global company?) but most of it is nefarious misdirecting, gaslighting and straight up lies. It’s all over GF in nearly every facet and corner. And most definitely impacting our individual personal careers and jobs.

So I do hear what you are saying. But it isn’t the same as other places you mentioned. He-l half of those are returning to prepandemic employment numbers. Most of those placing went on skyrocket hiring sprees in last 2-3 years. Not us.

So it isn’t a smart or d-mb thing - these posts are just pointing out the blatant unabashed lies we are all told with almost co--y swagger. From macroscopic to microscopic lies. It’s just plain wrong. It’s toxic. It doesn’t happen at other places to the level it does within Globalfoundries. So sure have a thick skin and don’t swallow everything you are told by your manager. But when you to second guess and question everything that is sad, well then it’s time to leave.

@1cys You should try to be more empathetic. This isn't a lesson readily learned. Most people are brainwashed early on to be good worker bees. Then once you're in a job, consider effective GF propaganda (like "OneGF"). Also consider how easy it is to become complacent when you are getting paid well, have good benefits and have some level of job satisfaction.

Etch AME was really horrible. We have poor leadership and biased guys in management. They need to be fired. They laid off of hardworking and smart guys to take revenge as they wrote bad in Katy survey.

I am really surprised some of the commentors here have patents and papers and that is their way of thinking. You are supposed to be smarter than that. Your relationship with any employer is purely transactional. You are at will to leave or let go at any moment, that is the rule of the game. Any company would treat their employees the same, it is not only GF. Didn't you hear about the tech layoff that has been going around at Amazon, FB, Intel, just to name a few?

You always have to be prepared for layoff regardless what your manager is telling you, your connection inside the company like, or how important the project you are working on is. Come on "smart" guys!

AME Etch Section & MSM’s can’t be trusted. They were quite shortsighted in deciding who to walk. They laid off some good people while keeping some very incompetent people. We lost some talent this past week in the name of cost savings. It’s only a matter of time before they do more layoffs. We have already decided collectively to tank them on the next survey. We have also decided we are NOT going to pick up the slack for their recent incompetence. I’m actually jealous I didn’t get laid off. Those who got the first round of severance are free.

This is interesting topic for sure as lay-off came as surprise to many of us including me. Seems this is well planned layoff . I was told by my manager that people who really really needed to keep module running were offered good package earlier to ensure GF is able to train junior employees before letting those experienced one go. GF knows that experienced ones will definitely leave unless there is very strong motivation for them to stay even if GF is sinking and laying off.
Idea is that GF will still save if those experienced ones are separated later this year as there will be line up of juniors to take over the job when the experienced ones are laid off.

I was laid off last week and was under similar illusion as post highlighted. I have many patents and was promised that I will get promo on next opportunity. I still asked my manager week before lay off just to be sure and he said that GF will lay off me if and only if they need to close the shop. I was triply convinced that I was safe and was busy doing my work as usual.
They laid me off.
My belief is shaken. My trust is broken. If anyone wants to believe GF, I really caution you. It is risky to trust GF and it’s management. They are all non-trustable.

Only part I would change about this post is that I was under the impression that if I worked hard and did well I would move up accordingly. I was misled. I have been told year after year that next year will be the year! But my year never arrives despite meeting and exceeding expectations and compass goals etc. Now while I wasn’t impacted by the recent events, but it is clear that this year again won’t be the year. I am ashamed I wasted so much time at Globalfoundries. My peers at other companies have far exceeded past me in their career development and it is embarrassing. I have wasted so much time and effort here. I bought into the promises and “potential” my management discussed with me and now years later none of it has come to fruition and I have nothing to show for it. Sure a few patents and papers, but so much earning opportunity lost and so much time wasted. I feel shame and embarrassment for this. It’s embarrassing to tell people I work at Globalfoundries. I am leaving as soon as I got even a matching offer to what I get now. Of course I will attempt for something better, but really if it’s the same I will take it. From my research it appears such an offer would be worth it as opportunities for career growth nearly every where else is far superior to that present at Globalfoundries

What I couldn’t believe talking to some laid off and not was in AME how it was mostly shift employees laid off (shift engineers, MTs and PTs). Will the EEs start doing PMs and CMs? We know PTs will be outsourced soon…

Poster is so true. I was under same impression and thought they really needed me to keep GF running as there were no new engineers in my department to replace me. All was illusion after I was laid off. I was considered as one of the key members in my team, working hard until last moment , had many patents.. in the end all useless. Probably I lacked one key attribute that my peers had .. but I really do not believe boot leaking takes you very long and hurts more in the long run. Overall am happy to get out of he-l and hopefully can find better place to grow.
My fellow friend, wish I could tell you that you are all safe. You are not , trust me if you can. Start planning to find job outside. This place will continue to degrade, continue to lay off and you will see more and more lickers rising management ladders. This all will turn this place like living he-l, full of toxicity, no balance and growth. Run away if you can .
