Thread regarding Gartner Inc. layoffs

Layoffs today in consulting 01/08/2026

Large layoff in consulting today. Rob Sibley joined the call said happy new year, asked about the holidays and then said “2025 was a tough year. So we have to let people go. You’ve been terminated, effective right now”. Then left HR to do the clean up. They were just as insensitive. Someone should look at the top leadership performance and lay them off. What they tell you in leadership calls is all bullsh-t. Nothing but bullsh-t.

it seems obvious to me that AI is having more of a negative impact on sales against the firm than IT is able to use AI for productivity gains and driving revenue.

At one stage, Gartner went through at least three or four CEO's in rapid succession. Gene Hall was practically a Hail Mary choice after all that drama. (And drama there was, including a CEO having intimate relations in public conveyances). Still, even successful CEO's run their course.

I heard rumors that Gene's job was on the line. But like other powerful guys, he appears to be made of Teflon.

In other big layoffs, years ago, recruiters were the first to go, then Consulting, then Research and Operations leadership scapegoats.

Many years ago, Gartner's Chief Counsel was an honorable guy. After he passed away (practically on the job), the company shifted, became much less decent or trustworthy.

It surprises me that shareholders let Gene Hall stay on the job. Sure, Gartner printed money under his early leadership. But now it's dishonorable, an operational shambles, losing money, wrecking whatever brand is left. Add this on top of the hypocrisy that diversity has always been there. Time to drop the pretense that the executive team has anything to offer, and let Gene Hall go.

Gartner is a miserable environment to work in these days. Consulting management is clueless. One SR leader was finally fired this week but many remain that only hire friends and protect them. HR is now running the company. This has become a joke of a company. So sad to see. Gene Hall should be embarrassed and step down.

@hb Gartner leadership invest more in lawyers who protect the company than humane leadership practices. Any scripting will have been vetted and cleared before the announcement, there's no way they'd leave themselves open to a lawsuit when they're doing layoffs practically every two months

If that is the cause for termination- it might a lawsuit in the making. WhenI was terminated they made a point to label it restructuring and not performance based.
