Thread regarding Optum layoffs

Leadership has bought into the AI hype

Leadership has bought into the AI hype hoping it will allow them to shed people.
AI is just another a tool...like a hammer.

"it is tempting, if the only tool you have is a hammer, to treat everything as if it were a nail." ~ Abraham Maslow

Management is handing everyone a hammer and telling them to go pound on everything the see.

Exactly what @bp+1kc37smg0 said.

Candyman cannot wait to have Ai implemented in OI so they can start pumping out chocolate bars at a faster pace.

@hc Still as re--rded as ever I see. This company isn't using ML in any notable capacity either. The focus is on throwing hundreds of teams at various AI slop projects that have gone nowhere and continue to go nowhere. People like you are actively degrading this company.

@h3 ML is to get results. AI to explain and use those in product. Oh well... See ya in rear view mirror

@gv Sorry but if you're saying this sh-t you should know you're unqualified to be saying it.

The internet wasn't some product that only a few companies had real access to innovating, to peddle off to other companies. AI is. We do not innovate the product, we can't in the position we are in. We are a client that is provided the product. We are reliant on OpenAI, Claude, etc. to drive the innovation, and sorry to disappoint you, they're not hiding any use cases from us.

AI is best used as an assistant. That's what it will be in 5 years from now, too. Any idea to automate processes with AI like this company is dreaming of, will result in disaster.

@gs no company was making profit on Internet in 1999. AI is in the same infancy.

If its inevitable then why isnt it being used in production anywhere and why are there zero AI companies making a profit. And why are the biggest AI boosters at Optum the most incompetent engineers on the planet? Must be a coincidence, surely...

😂 noticed that those posts saying AI has no value or fraud are getting high positives, those advocating realistically advertising to get on the bus are voted down.

Guys it's inevitable whether you agree or not. Get onboard.

AI = India, companies use AI because it sounds better and is a cover up for outsourcing. Don’t kid yourself!

@bm I will say you missed it and don’t understand it yet. You nor anyone else will be guiding it, that statement gave you away. Better learn HOW it works not HOW to use it. And AI Dojo DOES NOT teach you HOW it works.

Don’t get me wrong you and those that think like you are exactly what the AI companies want, and they will be laughing all the way to the bank.

A.I. stands for Another Indian/Indonesian. Don’t let them fool you. All of this OptumReal BS is just slave-wages people across the planet churning the data and some token process aggregating it.

It's not going away. Get on the bus. If you're smart, and capable, you have a chance to guide it in safely and ethically. Or you can walk and let fools drive; but don't complain when your MRI claim gets denied due not to malice but incompetence.

"It will be done by somebody or other. If wise men decline it, others will not; if honest men refuse it, others will not.” - John Adams.

If you do not get on the AI bus you will miss the ride and risk being run down. The same cynics also said the Interweb would never replace newspapers or help wanted. Get on the ride!

Additionally, innovation in AI will never be driven by a company like Optum/UHG that is a customer of AI. Even if we had our own in-house AI models we wouldn't innovate, Indians who end up here don't innovate, they replace and maintain. And we are an Indian company at our core.

All of these AI projects are so duplicative of one another, and they're all just using a model for some task that, many of them, could be solvable with a simple webapp/spa.

@ad Part of tech stack as in using it as copilot/chat assistant, sure. But the ability to add a chatbot to your project isn't exactly impressive to anyone who knows their sh-t and the ability to call the OpenAI endpoints isn't technically any more impressive than calling any other endpoints. We have dozens, potentially hundreds of projects in the company that are way more complex and solve way more important problems than the vast majority of these "AI use cases."

Summary, the AI hype is driven by the technically illiterate.

Rest assured, I'm fully aware of a lot of the large AI projects, I have yet to see one that will displace a single person. I'm talking about 10 million dollar budgets.... Lol. Indian tech
