Replacing laid off Americans with foreign workers on H-1B's for a $100K+ fee per worker isn't an option either. Offshoring is much easier, but Amazon has to pick countries with weak labor laws or do a bunch of contractor hiring. Green Cards are cheaper alternative, but that's like 3 years of waiting and paperwork to hire for less.
Layoffs are confirmed for Jan 27 with 4–20% targets, higher salaries being more at risk. Apply for FMLA to avoid being put on the list.
Things like a low rating in the last 1.5 years or drops in performance can be used for cuts. Remote work exceptions are basically going away. Even if your performance is fine, the structure around you can put you at risk.
