Caterpillar has followed the lead of other large companies by leveraging 5-day RTO to drive voluntary attrition. Call it a soft-layoff.
I have heard from reliable sources that fewer people than expected quit because of the RTO policy, and that “other options” for driving attrition will be considered, including hard-layoffs. No specifics on which business units will be impacted or when.
