Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Dell, AI and Tribal Knowledge

As much as Dell keeps talking about implement all aspects of AI, it is still the tribal knowledge dependent tech company I've ever worked at. It's what makes me believe that all the AI evangelicalism is mostly to push server and storage hardware.

I mean how is AI going to make suggestions when the needed information is only available in people's heads? Also with tribal knowledge there are multiple versions of the truth. AI is good at figuring out at least the most consistent version of the truth. But then again it is all tribal knowledge and not documented.

problem is, this tribal knowledge is required for adhering to existing legally binding agreements / contracts with customers, vendors, and gov compliance.

and senior leaders that knew how to manage all that nuance are gone, taking the parachute only they can get.
sme's that built the tools, had the relationships, knew the contacts are gone, and all you have left is consultants, IT, and senior leadership making sweeping decisions in their secured, badge protected, isolated quarantined echo chamber ivory tower, saying yes sir yes sir yes sir from fear.. or short term greed.. the majority of employees like us low cast marketing folks have no input on any of it, most are not aware that it's already too late ..
it's a perfect storm of their own making.

2026 is popcorn time for Dell unless they start hiring in droves and stop some key impossible changes.

You remove the need for a lot of tribal knowledge when you simply delete things. Sure there’s collateral damage. But you can’t make an omelette without breaking a few eggs. Who cares if nothing in IT works anymore when in Jenn Fe--h’s day it was the envy of most Fortune 100 companies and many wanted to buy what Dell Digital made? It makes it easier to automate everything with AI if there’s a lot less of it.
