Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

HR role in the RIF?!?!?!?

I’ve accepted that I may never get my old role back — that’s part of how corporate reorganizations work. But what hurts isn’t losing the job. It’s how it happened.

I was RIF’d despite strong performance and ongoing contributions, while some “eliminated” roles were quietly backfilled almost immediately. Even my own position, is now being filled again. Saving the favourites. That doesn’t feel like a business decision — it feels like a leadership decision.

When merit isn’t the driver, trust breaks. Employees begin to wonder if favoritism or toxic leadership played a bigger role in who stayed and who went. In a company this large, that’s dangerous. Without accountability at the SD level and above, a culture like this can take root at the market level and eventually hurt the entire organization.

This isn’t about wanting my job back — it’s about acknowledging a pattern that shouldn’t be ignored. Unfair layoffs don’t just impact people; they erode the foundation of the company itself.

In my experience, RIF selections are based on many variables therefore one may never know the real reason. But in many cases, the “why” is clear.

Outside of the company simply discontinuing entire departments / workgroups, RIF selections are most always conducted by the direct manager based on a set of standard guidelines. The names are reviewed with their next level and adjusted as needed. Then sent to HR for final approval. The problem is no matter how fair the guidelines are, it’s can be subjective, leaving room for unfairness.

Easy selections are when it’s clear an employee is underperforming, limited contributions, poor attendance, resistance to change, basically they are irrelevant, generally even the employee is aware their days are limited.

In between all of that, comes the politics… if your boss have to chose or sp-t hairs, you can bet they will fight for who they click with the best, those that best fit their expectations. Hey, everyone needs a trusting Allie.

Again, there are so many variables. In cases like mass layoffs, (13,000), there were guidelines and no way around some selections, even if management pushed back.

“Make the required RIF % and read the script on this day.”

Regardless of how we look at it, this is a terrible position to be in. Ultimately, we are not AI or robots; we are all human beings with human emotions.

The bright side is, “This Too Shall Pass” one day.”

@am They fired me and had been given an award just 3 months before..... Never sick, always going the extra mile. Week ends, at night or during vacation.
They fired me smiling .... this is incredible
and was not the cheapest to fire believe me.

HR is involved in other things besides just hiring (i.e., administering substance abuse programs, employee counseling, employee disiplinary plans, etc).

I do agree that AI will significantly impact HR's going forward role.

@a1 that’s not true. I got impacted and my salary is less than people reporting to me and they have larger tenure than mine. It’s all about how your relationship with hierarchy and favoring someone.

Agree same thing is happening with my role. They are " reorganizing " a person in to backfill me from another group. Tons of favoritism in my opinion. I at least showed up to the office. The ones they kept haven't been in for months.

RIF is never random. The severance portal they used had a 'selection manager' who picked the person with a business case (lower performers, or whatever), then HR sign-off, then SME sign-off and that person is added into the list for that 1 on 1 15 min scripted call, which Dan the man is so proud of.

I Just moved to Mint Mobile annual plan for under $200 with unlimited data. Bye bye red V with yellow and after millions spent they still didn't figure out the retail store sign and lighting with that yellow p-e.

@a9 no new hiring. Merging groups will happen and maybe long down the road hire contractors

@a8 the one who signed your review picked. HR signs off so those chosen are within the legal guidelines given.

Same thing happened with my role in vsp. They backfilled in Jersey at a higher price. Another vsp taker who they wouldn’t promote found his role was backfilled at the higher level - also in Jersey.

@aa you should file a complaint. Contact HR Barbie directly and also the Ethics hotline. You have nothing to lose, right? You already lost your job

@a9 it was backfilled with a guy who lost his role, thier position was eliminated and to save this person they eliminated me. It was not merrit atall, they person who backfilled me had multiple Hr complsints failed as a manager in priveous roles. No one in the region can keep up with the person but only one thing he was good at was $ucking AVP’s CROCK.

That’s so strange. What’s even the point of this layoff if they’re going to backfill positions almost immediately? OP can you not be considered for your old job if it’s getting backfilled? Did you ask your manager?

@a5 who, the AD or the SD, were making these decisions, or the next level higher within the ranks?

My manager would be the AD who made the decision?

@a4 agree with you about Hans and the Shank. agreed with you that the advent of technology that remote work should be the gold standard for all of the Verizon employees.

To help Verizon gain market share thus Verizon should give employees larger discounts, so employees do not go to the competitors for their internet service provider needs. Keep the employees happy and keep the Verizon market share.

Dont allow the competition to eat Verizon's lunch.

locations should no longer even be an issue or a measure of criteria!!! Hans and Shankar were both WRONG!!!!! applaud that both are out like me. this new CEO having more background with being a technologist needs to immediately and effectively rescind the RTO and have a level playing field. Remote work should be the norm. there should not be any favorite hub locations. With technology work from home should be the ultimate gold standard.

It seemed kinda random, but it i had to guess, they targeted people with more tenure who naturally get paid more and naturally would be older, then sprinkled in some less tenured folks to avoid lawsuits.
