Useless Volunteering Portal

Off topic, but since this website seems like the only place for vteamers to talk honestly, sharing this here

Does anyone else also feel like volunteering portal is such a sham and a useless activity

Most volunteering activities don’t make ANY true impact. It’s a stupid feel- good exercise so that silly bosses (and some silly employees) can virtue signal that they are good human beings. While making no real difference in the world

Honestly I play the game but couldn't agree more. I do it because we are told to put volunteer hours on our accomplishments. Some of the stuff is so trivial. Get 100 people on a call to watch a 7 minute video and write some note of encouragement. Everyone puts in the time before the video, half the people don't watch the video. I bet less than 10% actually write anything. How about digital cleanup? put in an hour because you deleted emails to supposedly lower the carbon foot print? I am not saying there are no useful volunteer activities, like donating blood, but the vast majority is just corporate BS meant to boos their public profile.

You can donate blood with volunteer hours, also toys for tots, and a few other useful things. It’s not all arts and crafts.

Agreed! I’ve made 2 Teddy Bears, counted fish and painted little gardening pots with seeds. I often felt the money they spend on these “Kits” and postage back and forth is ridiculous! Monies better spent on truly needed staples like housing, food and clothing

And yes, I missed one of my volunteer activities and I received 1.5 hours credit anyway.

Sadly, it is a scam.

I used to max out my volunteer hours and provide grants to the organizations I supported. But then some Yahoo decided they had the right to decide what type of volunteering was allowed. Now, I don't even pay it any attention.

Never signed up and have no intention to change. All the volunteer ops are fluffy

I’ve been through 4 layoffs at 3 different companies, unfortunately it’s a common corporate playbook for those working in IT

The first layoff, my theme song was - It’s My Life by Bon Jovi. Played that so loud on repeat, and it kept me going

Spot on with this nonsense, I remember being voluntold to do some of these activities. A few particular options were cloud counting and fish counting. I kid you not, who was the genius to offer VZ employees for these great opportunities?

Yes, I agree with you 100%. I think this is just PR for the company to do. I accidentally found out earlier this year that if you sign up for an online volunteering program, and even if you do not show up, the system still registers the hours you signed up for. Since then, I have just signed up online and let it run its course.... I do my own volunteering work and I do not want Verizon to dictate what activites I have to do..
