Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Age Discrimination Question

From what you've seen, do you think older employees were targeted unfairly when they chose who to lay off?

One group I am aware of that lost 25% of a large group - I think only one of the people riffed was over 50. It went mostly by perfomance and people with HR issues

This is why all RIF candidates have to be confirmed by HR. They review the demographics.

Companies tend to lay off higher paid employees, for obvious reasons. Higher paid employees also tend to be older than lower paid employees. Thus there is correlation but not necessarily causation. You would have to find a smoking g-n and even if they were illegally discriminating, they are too smart to put that in an email.

Older people laid off more? Yes. Discrimination? Probably not.

My two cents, they got a lot of the longevity type people, including myself, just had a lot of time in with the company, and same with the other people, we came over from Verizon wireless
Grew up in network operations
Oh, by the way, I’m in my 60 s but the other folks that were impacted that I know were in their 50s but had a lot of time.
It’s that reoccurring statement on the PNL that’s all you are

But isn't DEI no longer a thing! In fact Verizon had to disband any DEI initiative to get the fronteir merger thru existing administration

Without knowing what the age distribution is like at VZ, it’s hard to tell. E.g. We are seeing more 50+ could be in proportion to the employee population.

they will release age numbers, you'll be able to see.
they did hire a third party to review the numbers to ensure that there is no discrimination.
somebody did a poll in that thread below, and thy sampled 30+ employees, this is not scientific but it gives you an idea.
numbers are below:

Post ID: @OP+1kahcjhdj
Age average: 44
Years with VZ average: 12
This is the data below:
42 - 10 | 39 - 7 | 44 - 9 | 48 - 29 | 62 - 11 | 32 - 11 | 54 - 4 | 60 - 21 | 32 - 8 | 39 - 9 | 35 - 13 | 33 - 6 | 36 - 3 | 57 - 32 | 26 - 1.9 | 30 - 2 | 67 - 0.1 | 49 - 21 | 53 - 30 | 58 - 15 | 51 - 19 | 55 - 30 | 36 - 11 | 47 - 6 | 29 - 2 | 45 - 2 | 42 - 15 | 34 - 11 | 53 - 10 | 29 - 5 | 52 - 7 | 44 - 2 | 45 - 25
