I’m curious , because I have heard of really smart people being let go in engineering and then some that’s been here 20 + years and then some who were just hired 3 or less years ago. Did managers have a say or were we really selected by someone who doesn’t have a clue who we are ?

@a6 Not true, 54 and still standing. My team was let go and I had no input whatsoever. Don't post if you are not informed.
My manager said that they had very little input into who was let go. I survived. The team as a whole was cut 50%. Finance.
@a6 I’m 41 and was impacted
@a1 I got leading last year and achieving this year ... no disciplinary actions and im fu--ing gone
@ag hope we have more of you, but it is unfortunate in Vzw.
Lowest performers on my team were let go
It's really a mixed bag. I had to shed 15% from my team. Some factors:
- anyone who wanted out (and verbally confirmed their desires, or "soft volunteered") when rumors began
- location, not at hub
- the work the role does can entirely stop without massive impacts on core operations
- current and historical performance, past 2 to 3 years
- forced to pick from good performers on the same team and chose the lowest ranking, even if good
I did with the input of band 6 leaders.
No age, gender, race, salary considerations whatsoever, period.
@a6 I’m 60. Still here
65 6ye no impact
It depends, if you are not buddy or likable by your Sr.Dir, meaning if you speak up your idea and goes/argues against higher management, then you are out in next round and you are marked for future quota. There are plenty 67, 65, 70 still onboard and no issues that I have seen.
@a6 38 here and got the call today. Also worked on the Fed side with projects that are still in production till end of next year. Thats going to be fun.
@a6 lies detected. im 42
No reason was given and from what I was told, no, the direct manager did not have input. No real strategic business decision made on ability or performance. Higher performing individuals were let go.
not sure exactly-- but from what i heard through some people impacted one of them very skilled- developing in GCP and location was a factor. Not near any offices and working in a back room of a store at times or home... I have heard that WFH would play a factor and if you can be in office for certain roles.
Also heard from someone high in the CS org that hired a firm to structure the layoffs--- since lawsuits could be a concern so there is some "standard" that is used to make decisions. Not sure how they decided with MPS but with stores pretty straightforward with performance and if it makes any sense to close or convert them to indirect.
@a6 I’m 51…this is not true. I have firsthand knowledge of people under and over 50 that are safe and that were impacted
They look at a lot of different things like location, role, whether or not the work is value added, can it be outsourced or eliminated, etc, but in a RIF this size, performance isn't at the top of the list. Managers may be asked to rate and rank their people but the decisions in a RIF this size are usually done at the VP/HR/Outside consultant level using algorithms and Legal signs off. Do NOT take it personally, because they don't.
The answer is 50. That's the age. If you're under, you're still here. If you're over, you may be gone. Technically, laying off only the grey hairs is illegal, but honestly, when was the last time America was fair?
@a1 false! Most of the people I know that got let go were performers and a lot of knowledge behind them
@a1 also Favortism! Lawsuits pending
From my experience getting laid off it had to have to do with position as opposed to performance. No way it could be different. Had 2 teams with similar duties down to just split by work load. They obliterated one team and kept the other one.
Some cuts were made from locations that were closing.
They were selected based upon thier performance this time
