Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Silver lining for VSP folks that are RIF’d

I know many of you are kicking yourselves for not taking the VSP package but I want to share some positives of not taking it and getting RIF’d (assuming you get the max 35 weeks)

  • had you taken it last year and had a last day of September, your insurance would now be running out at the end of this month. Instead, you have it through the end of this year and for another 7 months
  • your severance pay will likely hit in 2026 making the tax impact much much smaller
  • you don’t have a non compete and are can be rehired at Verizon. VSPers can never be employed by VZ or a subsidiary again
  • instead of 60 weeks of pay, you essentially got 100 (granite you had to work for 65 of them. But that’s still more money in your packet than if you took the VSP)

Just wanted to provide a more positive outlook on this crummy situation. Best of luck to everyone.

That's not true if you took the VSP, you just have to wait 6 months before you can work on Verizon projects again. I should know, I literally cut PO's that pay for a contractor that was in my department and they took the VSP.

Op true if it’s just a numbers game. The peace I have from taking VSP in ‘24 and moving on - settling in to my new career (which will take me into retirement) - is worth more than any dollars I would have made staying on until now. It always felt like the inevitable at VZ. Peace now is priceless.

@OP
Thank you for the kind and wise words. I almost took it, but wasn't ready. Worked another year then asked awhile back for a rif opportunity if it came along...here we go!! Im sorry for those worried...I'm worried if I'm NOT selected, so hopefully I saved someone's job..we will see.
Big Red has been very good to me, and my Leadership chain (GNT) has been awesome; at least on the local level. I have no complaints or regrets and will leave with great memories and a sense of learning, accomplishment, and gratefulness.

Would be great if we received 3 weeks for every year instead of 2. But I suppose we should be grateful, as some companies just throw you on the street and give you 0 weeks.
