Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

WOW!! $40,000-$50,000 hiring bonuses for train crew at several locations on the UP website.

I wonder what someone thinks when they see a hiring bonus like that? Do they think it's a good company with lots of opportunities in a growing industry, or a he-l ho-e with no work life balance that can't retain good people. Most of us on the inside know the answer.

Will the conductor be able to release a handbrake now? Or will they still need help?

We're a Great Big Rollin' Railroad, one that ev'rybody knows,
We were born of Gold and Silver Spikes, a hundred years ago,
We're a million miles of history a-shinin' in the sun,
We're the Union Pacific and our story's just begun...

From the Great Plains of Nebraska to the California seas,
From the Summits of the Rockies to the mighty redwood trees
We're a thousand wheels of freight train, hear the diesel engine's power,
We're the Union Pacific, doin' ninety miles an hour...

Bound from Omaha to Portland through Cheyenne and Laramie,
We're a-headin' west for Boise on the Mainline to the sea
'Cross the flats at Salt Lake City, on to Vegas and L.A.
We're the Union Pacific and we've got the Right-of-Way.

From the green fields of the Prairies to the blue Pacific shore,
We deliver your great cargo and come rollin' home for more.
On the backbone of Our Nation you can see us make the climb,
We're the Union Pacific and we're gonna be on time...."

My old manager told me back about 10 years ago that if I quit or got fired their would be a 100 men waiting to hire on and take my spot. I wonder if that attitude is why this isn’t the case anymore?

Back where they had the sign on bonus for machinists and electricians in north Platte, they brought a bunch on, then laid them off just short of a year. Then told them they wouldn't get the other $10,000 still owed. What a load of cr-p, there was a lot of people screwed by that one.
I hope everyone does their research and takes the advice from others about it. Run away from this place!!!

Whoever takes the bait won’t see all of their bonus, they’ll be let go before 1 year so the company don’t have to pay it. It’s just a scheme to get people to hire on, hopefully interested parties due their own research on the company before applying.

There is a worker shortage all over the country. This has been reported on for over a year. Every industry is trying to fill jobs, some offering large bonuses. The military is offering bonuses in some fields they traditionally didn’t for this same reason. I would not recommend anyone go to work for any railroad, but the issue of bonuses and trying to attract workers isn’t just a railroad problem.
