Thread regarding Occidental Petroleum Corp. layoffs

How is the WLB for an engineer at oxy?

I understand it would be dependent on department and location. I have heard different things from people. One says oxy is the best WLB compared to others while another has said they will work you (which i know every company does)

I was there for over ten years. Most under Anadarko but some under Oxy. They are not a good company. It is kind of like joining a street gang over there. You could pull down your pants and deuce in the street as long as you are one of their OG's. They have a militant mindset but they are generally mediocre at everything. In all seriousness, not a place that cares about their people on any meaningful level.

They expect you to give your life for their work. Seriously, why aren't you asking this question of the professional, successful companies instead of a collection of dead wood like Oxy?

If you want WLB then go to Europe. We only want hard workers in The United States of America. Work comes first unless you are retired.

WLB is pretty good in the onshore BUs. Sucked in the GOM BU before I transferred. I think the GOM leaders liked to make people work weekends just to make them feel thankful for getting an occasional free weekend.

Unfortunately the work/life balance has been overhyped by professional people who don’t make much money. Oil company people are in a different situation.

Also throw in a generous number of PTO days and you are working well less than 200 days per year.

Time to put pencil to paper.... subtract Saturdays , Sundays, Stat holidays, Paid Vacation days and every second Friday off, you will find that you only work about 200 days/year. Throw in the WFH schedule and I would conclude that there is a fair WLB. Not bad when you are also compensated as a top 2% wage earner. If you actually have to work late some days /weekends/holidays try to remember this....

I have never applied to a job where I thought about WLM and WHM. Most of the time I was just looking to better my financial position where I could take better care of my family. I guess times have changed, but it also looks like there are more people that think they are entitiled to the job how they see it. Those people should just look at starting their own business to suit their work needs. But to answer the question of the original poster my time at Oxy has been good. My managers have just wanted to get the job done in the normal amount of time, but in many cases where I had to work extra they usually rewarded me for going the extra mile. If you have a strong work ethic in my mind you will be rewarded and standout among your peers.

The expectation is that people work their butts off without being told to do so. Anyone not doing so should be let go. Unfortunately the HR process makes it difficult to fire lazy people who are just barely doing their jobs. The way to avoid having these people around is to never hire them in the first place.

Oh no. You don’t have to work at all at Oxy. They pay you well and you are not required to do any work. Isn’t that what you youngsters are after with WLB. Seriously the WLB is a bunch of bullsh-t. You do what you need to do to support your family even if it requires overworking.
