the company was actively and rapidly hiring a mere 5 months ago, with leadership reassuring employees at least 1 month ago (granted this could have been decided recently). The writing was on the wall, and the company ran very inefficiently, with a revolving door of employees which forced them to have to consistently hire and overhire new employees. Also had a ton of bloat, with employees who weren't client-facing not having enough work.
