Thread regarding GlobalFoundries layoffs

worsening project ownership/leadership

I am an upper-level engineer at fab8 that gets pulled into a lot of things. Something I've noticed over the past 1.5-2 years is the lack of leadership in initiatives that come up. There is really no strong presence or driver in technical meetings. Just a bunch of engineers offering their piece. Most reluctantly take on action items. Rinse & repeat in follow up meetings. No cohesion or leadership keeping people on track. Does anyone else see the same? Any other causes? Lack of interest or motivation? Too much other work?

Honestly, the best solution is to just leave GF. Many people have left or been laid off in the past and they are happier for it. I stayed for years and was absolutely miserable and frustrated. Was laid off in December and have since been reemployed. Life outside of GF, is like a prisoner being released and coming home. You realize just how better other companies are run, how a positive work culture can make the work experience pleasant. You can’t change GF, but you can change yourself.

If you don't think leadership at GF is a serious issue and will cause the company to fail, then you deserve a seat on the sinking ship!! Open your eyes, GF is a financial scam show and now that every fab in the world isn't overloaded GF may never get back to even 80% fully loaded again. How many 200mm new technologies which will fill the 200mm fabs in the near future or even long-term future do you see being worked on, other than GaN essentially none but yet those fabs are nearly empty. Real leaders would be pushing development which finds "niche" markets to fill those fabs.

I have noticed it too. I think it’s because the ambitious engineers, leaders and managers have left. They saw no career advancement at Globalfoundries rigged system and got out. The majority that have remained are the same ones whose philosophy is to keep quiet and keep their head down and collect pay check until sh-t hits fan.

It also directly correlates to our managers. They aren’t managers at all. Most haven’t been formally trained in managing and fumble through it. Even the ones with “10 years of experience managing”- well not really. They have 10 years of experience in a terrible system. Really it’s 10 years of experience faking at being a manager. They don’t lead or push or drive the team, projects towards forward progress. The lack of good competent managers is the major crux of the problem. And these projects and work will suffer and just become stagnant and fester like nearly all work at Globalfoundries.
