Thread regarding Alphabet Inc. (Google) layoffs

I'm not worried about Google employees

I wish I had Google on my resume. Anybody who worked there and in any of the other FAANG companies will have other companies rushing to grab them. It might not be as high pay but they'll have no issues finding a new job. Those of us who were laid off from smaller companies are the ones who are struggling to find work in this environment. When recruiters have so many FAANG candidates to choose from, the rest of us needn't even bother.

@3nui+1kQgITCa right. Google engineers don't write software from the ground up. And non-Google engineers never use libraries.

Clearly you haven't held a SWE job for long.

When I come across a CV with Google experience, it goes strait into the trash. Might as well be the Scarlet Letter.

Also, most of the FAANG company (in engineering roles) developers are used to the internal systems (libraries / framework / tools). They are not exposed to writing / developing software from ground up. That will be a deterrent to many companies mainly small and medium companies who expect the developers to be more agile and quick to develop from ground up.

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA ..gasping for air ........ HAHAHAAHAHAHAH ..... gasping for more air ...... HAHAHAAHAHAHAH ... ... gasping for even more air .... you are in a rude awakening if you think companies want to to hire you. You will first be offered a 60% salary cut, and you will be required to actually work on products that BRING IN REVENUE, something you have no clue about

Two FAANG companies on my resume did swat to get an interview. The world outside of Google is d-mb.

To be honest, I have 9 years of Google on my resume, got Superb ratings when Perf was a thing, sold a ton of big deals and, well it hasn't helped very much.

The days of "brand name" having value are over in my opinion, hiring managers simply want to you to manage their checklist of requirements to a tee, recruiters can't draw outside those lines, and if you don't fit you won't get the job no matter what name you have on your resume.

So, go to the company that you won't hate working for and puts you in the best possible position to work on projects that prove out your skillset with market-demanded requirements. Name recognition be damned. That's what matters more.

What I learned at Google was how to build a great organizational culture with rigor, collaborate well with peers, own the meeting room, and embrace diverse perspectives. Unfortunately this is valued very little by companies, they just want someone with the "what" such as X years experience doing x, y, z. And if you get that job, what you learned at Google will get you in trouble more than not, because you've learned what you think is the "right" way to do things and it inadvertently rubs people (who are also subconsciously threatened by your name brand) the wrong way.

So, what I learned at Google has been useless, like a graduating an MBA program at a tier 2 school, albeit I have some savings in the bank to get me through the next 18 months of layoffs and downturn. And for a while, the envy of friends and peers was nice. And now it's gone.

I used to work at a FAANG, but wanted to switch jobs to small, local company. I applied to a couple, thinking it'd be a slam dunk, but I never got an interview. Only medium/large companies considered me.

Which great companies are hiring in this economic environment?

Many of these former employees are going to find that a lot of companies will see the high salaries and perks given at Google as a detriment to hiring. Most companies will be more realistic in their salary ranges, perks and wok expectations and will have a hard time seeing some of these expectations as a good fit. Not to mention that many won't be interested in sponsoring a visa applicant.
