Thread regarding Optum layoffs

Layoffs to move operations offshore

Just got out of a meeting with the VPs of Enterprise Shared Services and SVPs of Customer Strategy, and VPs of Business Ops in which they went over the following:

  1. They will start layoffs in Feb, during the Common Review Period, and will include those employees who are on medical leave.
  2. They are looking to layoff about 100 to 200 remote and office employees across the US.
  3. They are looking to expand the Optum Global Advantage brand, so some jobs will be posted exclusively for PR/PHL/IND, since they have been tasked to fill in approximately 500 remote roles.
  4. They realized it is cheaper to outsource our jobs since they enjoy tax exemption status overseas in exchange for job roles.
  5. Employees who will be affected include: Claims representatives, Quality Auditors, Managers, SMEs, Adjusters, Trainers and more.

That’s pretty much what I can remember. I guess we’ll have to wait and see how much they will offer us for severance. Good luck to everyone!

No one cares at this job. You have a bunch of narcissistic buffoons as supervisors who bully, harass, don’t know the job, play favorites, and log on everyday to antagonize their targets who call them out on their unethical behavior. It’s so toxic!!

In general, offshore is a rank collection of people culled off the street with zero experience, trained in-house as "experts," and then set loose on unwitting clients as SME's. It takes multiple offshore personnel to accomplish anything... one that actually has the access, and the rest to Google and scour in-house scriptbooks. Save dat money, tho!

Time zones do matter if you have worked with offshore very often. They might be available for a few hrs in the morning but rarely have 3rd shifts working graveyard unless its call center or data entry production work. For some teams, there is an advantage of having the time zone difference because you can ask for something to be done and like little magical elves the work is done when you get in the next day. The reverse works for them. A truly awesome team is a mix of both onshore and offshore. To make it work, people doing the work have to be competent enough to do what is asked without someone around to ask questions. So leadership of the offshore has to be the most competent one of the group so they can fill in when the requestor is not around. That is a huge issue. Leadership is often not knowledgeable so they offer next to no benefit other than trying to get more people and grow their own teams like pyramid schemes. That is the issue I have found working with offshore for 15 years. And that same can be said about onshore too so it's not a complaint. It's a reality.
Either way replacing current workers to hire more onshore is a super sh---y way of reducing moral and created more scarcity thinking conflicts. The same people that are running the government appear to be the same people running this company. There is enough money to keep existing staff and collaborate with offshore. When they figure that out, their productivity will be unmatched!

Time zones don’t matter. They work off shifts to be available during our work hours.

I was laid off in February 2020. I was expecting my review with bonus and raise but instead I was blindsided with a layoff and severance. Optum is evil. Be careful

...This information is proprietary and confidential...

Funny, when I was at Optum, offshore employees had direct access to PHI/PII data, and the senior director in charge of the project (who was based in India) didn't seem to care about that confidential data at all.

Just remember the NDAs you have agreed to. This information is proprietary and confidential. It’s best to refrain from posting on this website from a company issued laptop. People will never learn.

Wow that is a lot of stress created for very little long term value, but I am sure there was much thought and analysis that went into the decision.
2 OGA for 1 US might cost the same but OGA are not stupid. They get their Optum job on their resume and pivot out after being abused by corporate within 2 years. US workers seem to be the d-mb ones who stay in unfulfilled soul crushing jobs long after it is healthy for them. If it is about productivity, I say bring on OGA, but you will likely still need some people left to tell them exactly what to do, so cut wisely....Also, consider the time difference and when your customers internal and external will be needing to get things done. Always make sure to leave US backups on US timezones to handle the emergencies that will occur when you have the OGA squad as the main support. Nothing sucks worse than having things fall apart and your entire support team is fast sleep enjoying their work life balance or one of the many holidays.

It typically takes more than even two offshore resources to do the job of an FTE. It's pathetic.

No one gives a sh-t anymore about this toxic workplace. It has all gone to he-l. The morale is at the lowest point I have seen. My direct reports have been dropping like flies and I don’t blame them.

Hi!

  1. UHC will be affected too.
  2. Cosmos, UNET, OHBS, CSP, CRT, Case Install, Benefits, ECS, OMNI, UMR…
  3. For offshore it seems they don’t have as many meetings as we do, making them spend more time on production instead of having us working overtime! But yes, I agree with you!

Does this apply to UHC side as well? Will customer service/advocacy jobs be affected?

Do they realize that quality affects the bottom line too? Hiring Offshore may be cheaper but the quality may be compromised which in turn cost money too.
