Week 3 - Nielsen Layoffs

Many departments in the U.S. were hit hard with the first round of layoffs; some were were gone within an hour of communication, some were given extended last day.

Adding to the layoff issues is the reorganization of Nielsen; associates are being moved to new leaders either permanently or on a temporary basis until senior leaders figure it out.

Nielsen is historically poor at internal communication and end-to-end planning; the reorganization and layoffs situation has been no different.

The associates that were not impacted are being asked to move forward and go back to a business as usual mentality.

Senior Leaders concerned about their own job security are rolling out “All Boots On the Ground, everyone will have to pick up more assignments “ speeches.

Hourly associates are being told that there is no approved overtime.

Salaried associates are being asked to give up their days off.

Someone will crack, deadlines will be missed and eventually all the U. S. work will move offshore.

I truly believe that what Nielsen is doing is based on business needs and the keeping the business profitable.

All this makes perfect business sense and the layoffs are an unfortunate but essential part of running a business.

What I’m reading and hearing is that the remaining employees are either being set up to fail or will be essentially squeezed until they can’t give anymore and then laid off.

Work/Life balance is not in your future if you are a Nielsen employee.

Another week and Managers continue to talk out both sides of their mouths.

Everyone will need to add duties to their day, we need to show our value to the company.

From the other side of their mouth, no one has any idea what the criteria was for the people that were part of the layoff group.

Getting sold off doesn’t mean your job is saved, by the way. I’ve been apart of many mergers, partial company sell offs, etc

It’s a cr-p shoot either way.

Sometimes you’re brought on board for 3-6-12 months just to off board your info. Then canned.

Man, I feel for you guys. Especially anyone in a client facing sales position. The catch of being someone who survives is you end up losing in the long term most times. I survived many shake ups in the 2000's and then into the 2010s - and by the end, when my # was finally called after almost 20 years, I was doing TRIPLE the work any normal person could be expected to do I had so many accounts thrown my way, I didn't even know half of my client's names when they called. LOL. Funny now, but horrific back then. Listen to this old dog, folks....getting the ax often times is a blessing in disguise. Was for me!

I doubt off shore, they’ve cut as many contractors as they can and want to cut more.

But I expect them to sell off chunks of nielsen to other conpanies. divide us up further into divisions that can be sold. i’ll be surprised if Nielsen is around the way it has been, in another five years. Maybe a much smaller core team but the rest chunked up. Judging by who bought Nielsen & all the Nielsen debt, seems standard practice.
