I try not to think about the layoff but to concentrate on looking for new opportunities as much as possible. Going to a smaller company doesn't sound like a bad idea anymore, do you agree?

Check their VC funding on Crunchbase (https://www.crunchbase.com).
Small companies with recent funding can survive a bad recession.
If their last VC round was a couple of years ago, they are not safe.
smaller company, smaller paycheck!
Smaller company is fine just stay away from the mom and pop outfits that pinch every penny they can.
If they boast that working there is just like family.......run....run far away.
