Thread regarding Microsoft Corp. layoffs

I'm supposed to start next month

Should I be worried about these layoffs? What are the chances my offer gets rescinded?

Yea, Microsoft is an ugly culture....the kind that over time hurts your stomache. If you had other options, it would be good to revisit. They have also brought over the off-shore strategy king from Accenture to be their Corporate Strategy Lead. It's a risky time to join that firm....and again, politics some of the ugliest I've seen where no amount of money makes up for it if you have a soul.

Be careful, I had an offer recinded after all paperwork signed about 2 weeks before I was supposed to start. All the I's and T's were crossed but it came from up above they said where all postions that had not started yet had been recinded. I would not give notice at your current job until the day you start. Take a 2 week vacation the week you are too start and then if you make it in, then give one weeks notice. It's survival time.

So long as you click to accept the offer they won’t rescind it. But many of times it has happened, where someone is told they are receiving an offer, sometimes even have it in their inbox but wanted to sit on it over night, find that the req’s are frozen and the offer is retracted. When I was hired many years ago at Cisco it almost happened to me, I accepted my offer and 10 minutes later the hiring manager called me frantically checking to see if I’ve accepted or not… I barely made it in, they retracted req’s moments after I accepted.

Anyway, when leadership announced the layoff’s in November, they told everyone that they are NOT freezing req’s. They told us that they are laying off because they are too heavy in some areas and they want those employees to find internal positions in other areas that need people now…. Lame move… there are ~3k internal req’s open. About the same number of people they laid off… but different areas of the company.

The CPU/SOC development teams are hiring. Reqs just opened up in the last couple of weeks as these layoffs are being planned, so MS is strategically hiring still.

Even if the offer is not rescinded, what your back and get use to quarterly lay off for the next two years. If you think you want that environment and will survive those rounds, then keep going.

Absolutely. 1000%. Just look at the post a few down from this one. Unless you are an AI hire you have a 50/50 chance, and zero time to play the Microsoft political game of saving yourself. If you can stay where you’re at I would highly encourage you to reconsider the dumpster fire situation.

Sadly, I doubt many/any people have an answer for you. I recently left a promising career elsewhere to join MSFT. Hoping that I don't regret it.
