Thread regarding Northwestern Mutual layoffs

Engineering and IT is FU---D here.

Its unfathomable how we manage to keep things to a point were they are stable enough to work. From the silo's and walls put up to keep us from working together to NM's deployment of Jira. Other companies such as SCJ and Fiserv seem to do it better.

I feel like i was lied to during my interview. They don't want us to work. They want us to walk around all day and chit-chat while getting coffee and watching SLT talk about diversity and non binary inclusion...

We have so many vulnerabilities out there that its a surprise we haven't been in the news yet. No one holds their weight except maybe 1 person among 20. Sometimes in meetings you'll have 25 people and only 1 or 2 people chime up to to talk about important topics. Even our vendors know we are terrible.

Its a running joke among people in this field that if you go to NM to be an Engineer you are committing career su----e. I'd rather have a blank spot on my resume than have to explain my 4 year career here thus far.

Whats the purpose of all this?!?

SR's cult appeared lost when she did not mention her DEI rhetoric. Everyone knows how much her WIT squad craves hate and drama. It is possible senior leaders are finally figuring out how clueless and inept she actually is.

Every company has its pros and cons. Every company has people that perform average, some above average and some below. It’s really not that complicated. People like us make companies culture. I agree NM tends to make slow progress but that’s by design. Regardless of what you hear from your leadership - NM is NOT a technology company. It’s is in insurance business and they do that very well.

Now - your concern is valid. However, YOU own YOUR career. Not your manager, not your team and certainly not your company. If you don’t like it here, apply at a company where you feel you will drive greater satisfaction. If you find that company and love your job, help others.

Life is too short to not enjoy the job where you spend a lot of time, my friend.

Being a previous employee, It is a NM pattern. They promise in recruitment a challenging environment and that things are changing. The reality is the most advanced technology is the planning tool and that is triviality in most companies. Those who are ambitious, want learn, want to improve themselves, love challenge and collaboration are not meant to be NM employees. (hopefully prospective recruits can find this and educate them on who they are and want to be)

Those that want a paycheck and potential to have the same skillset as being in the food service or housekeeping industries, this is the right fit.

I'm very shocked though at today's Weekend SR did not mention DEI once and actually spoke about her team and their goals.

NM comes with its perks and most of them are around decent pay, a chance to have work-life balance, stability, and not having to deal with the pitfalls of a public company.

If you are looking for a cutting edge company that really has their s*** together, then you should have realized by now this isn’t the place. Why stay 4 years to try and change something that has been like this forever?

Then go, someone with your qualifications would have no trouble finding a top-flight job in either the food service or housekeeping industries

but, but, we were just treated to cookies (but not drinks) and a chance to take pictures w/ cardboard cutout heads of the narcissists that consider themselves leaders. how could this be true?
