Got laid off yesterday.. it's my first time and I am wondering about unemployment. Will Teradata contest it if I apply? Since I got a severance package am I ineligible? Also it sounds like even though I'm no longer actively working, I will stay on payroll for a few more days, do I wait until I'm officially off payroll to file?

The way it works is that you apply and every few weeks you tell them what money came in. I was RIFed about a year ago. I had to fight tooth and nail to get every cent that they owed me. So, every once in a while I would tell unemployment that I got $X and they just wouldn’t give me any money. Unemployment ensures that you bring in a minimum amount. If you get paid $1 less than unemployment… they will give you $1.
Also, they ask when your last day of employment was. If you don’t apply for month or so, you won’t forfeit any money.
Apply as soon as you feel comfortable again. After your anxiety induced bender.
The answers to some of your questions depend on which country and, in the US, which state you're in.
You were RIFed, and Teradata will not contest paying unemployment.
In CA, you don't have to wait till after you receive the severance to apply. The date that matters is the last day you worked. You'll need to provide info about your most recent 18 months of gross income, by quarter, so you might start gathering that info.
If you haven't got your payslips and no longer have access to Workday, you can request that info -- I got a fast and courteous response when I did.
There are a lot of resources out there for you, and you're not alone.
Best advice I've had: You will sometimes think back about whether you could have done something differently to avoid this. When those thoughts come, let go of them. This was a RIF, the second in two months. It's not personal.
Deep breath.
If your severance was paid in one lump sum, vs. being paid bi-weekly for a few weeks, you can claim unemployment on your last day at TD.
Unemployment will not pay until the number of weeks severance is up.
Teradata does not contest it.
You can start application once you have received all your final monies. Your last day worked and last pay date drive a lot of forms. Keep everything. It’s a long and arduous process.
