Thread regarding Cengage layoffs

OpenStax Publishing vs Cengage

One of my children recently started online college classes.

While both Cengage and Pearson materials had to be purchased, a few classes are providing free material by a company called OpenStax.

I always thought of no-cost materials to be substandard to those produced by larger companies. I have to say that the two offerings I've seen have been well done. There's also LMS integration, etc.

If a student wants a printed copy of a textbook it can be purchased for $30. Otherwise, the eBook and all activities are provided online free of charge.

OpenStax is funded by Bill Gates' foundation and other philanthropic charities. I would imagine the careers at the company must focus on the quality of content because bells and whistles and fancy marketing aren't really needed.

Has anyone worked at OpenStax? I'm not looking to go back into publishing, but if someone were interested in working for a mission-based company it may be worth looking at, providing the Cenforce isn't recruiting.

My Dean and the school president directed us to use free materials, they sign my paycheck so that’s it.

A bunch of OpenStax content actually went into Webassign years ago. It's pitched as a supplement now iirc, but it rivals any other material that's offered.

Good lord, who in their right mind would be looking to get back into publishing?
