My colleague blames himself for getting laid off because he thinks that perhaps he should have put more effort in order not to lose his source of income. I feel really bad for him but is it possible that someone who worked here for several years did not realize that we are just a number here and that there is no need to blame ourselves.

Sounds like the friend directed efforts in the wrong direction. Too much time doing actual work they needed to pivot that energy to sticking that nose up someones backside. Always has and always will be popularity contest. Time to shake off that idealism perspective. Hard work rarely is rewarding in a large enterprise. They just work you like a cog till the teeth are stripped off or the cog completely fails throw you in the scrap pile and buy a cheaper one.
"The great resignation" wasn't that the theme for the last 2 years? Just quit, work from home and make demands. Go for it. Things change quickly, be in the office and be visable. Just my thoughts.
SF should only cares about shareholder values. You are getting paid by SF for your work. That is the only transaction or relationship. There are no loyalty included with the relationship. End of the story.
