Thread regarding Occidental Petroleum Corp. layoffs

Oxy's executives fiduciary duty to their shareholders shows gross incompetence. Chemicals, DAC,etc, etc are not unlike Enron's creative playbook. The investor market can't tell what Oxy really does. Sounds familiar?

@ph Care to add up the fatality count between the two? Or do you make your posts with a totally straight face?

@p7 Where can I get a pair of those blinders you wear? I need something to keep the light outta my eyes so I can sleep at night. Nothing corrupt about Oxy? Did you say that with a straight face. You'll be asking whats wrong with Oxy next and I KNOW you people throw tantrums at that answer.

@pc you obviously don't know much the Enron collapse. It was complete and total fraud by a gangster management team. You may like OXY's current management team, or their financial results, but they are NOT fraudsters. The comparison is ridiculous.

@pc Well said. Our fellow contributors don’t realize that many companies have skeletons that need putting away and the best way is a fat payday for the Leadership Team…and the skeletons go away…they actually believed the no layoffs at town hall…everything is dynamic and everyone is disposable. Gulf of America assets are creating some risk profile that LT and investors are keen to dispose of…

Really? Had friends that worked at Enron that had blind faith in the company and the executive right up to the day they were told to leave the building. Oxy thinks it is also has the smartest people in the room also... Watch and learn.

@h7 poor comparison to Enron. Enron was total corruption. OXY is not a corrupt company. Not even close.

@kb

High debt and low oil prices is a helluva business model. All this layoff talk is insane.

@kb There's that delusional 'nothing wrong with Oxy' position they tell themselves again and again.

There is nothing wrong with this company except for the high debt and low oil prices. They will survive without having mass layoffs. Any VSP is just a present to those over 60 who want to retire and does not mean that massive layoffs will follow. Those left will have lots of opportunity.

You are too young to understand. Google Ken Lay and the story of Enron. He blew sunshine all over the Enron employees as the ship sank. Not sure I'd trust anyone in the Oxy executive given their poor performances since 2019...

You haven't included the scenario that your boss may have a favorite in his team and decides to promote them over you. Happens all the time. That's an internal forced ranking. Y'all need to wake up and deal with reality. Be networked and visible up the food chain to minimize end around political promotions. They hurt worse than forced corporate rankings. I guarantee Oxy is ranking the bottom 15-20% for a non voluntary separation.

There are no forced rankings but there are forced top rankings??... What sweat lodge do you people use? If they are managing that part of the distribution, they leave the rest alone?? Please God, let this tu-d float past $50 so I can flush the rest of my Oxy stock and be done with this...

@cy, That’s what they told you to soften the blow that your performance wasn’t at the top.

@cj+1k9zt97j6 - You are 100% correct. If you put everyone as exceptional they will come back and say that won't work. From what I have seen they want to see people rated across the spectrum. You can have all strong employees, but if you rank all employees as high performers or exceptional some will need to fall down a ranking to get the curve right. It has happened to me many times.

This is no news lol. While there is no forced negative rating. There are always forced top rankings. If you are getting topmost rating (top right corner or the matrix) for more than 3 years you are either God or really amazing at whatever you are doing+ no enemies.

There are only so many senior level positions and managers in the company. There is only one president. Forced rankings occur to deal with this and to make sure your boss doesn’t promote his whole team this year because you are unicorns. 70 percent of the population should be doing your job as expected. 15 percent are high fliers and the bottom 15 percent need to improve. Call BS if you want, 40 years of this game says I’m right. Forced rankings are necessary and are used at Oxy.

No, it’s BS. I know for a fact that no one is being forced to rank people into a distribution. Anyone who says differently is misinformed or a liar. The person talks about a normal distribution does not know what they are talking about when it comes to the performance rating process here.

Surprise! It's been going on for as long as HR departments have unfortunately existed. There are only so many fish to go in each bucket. Forced rankings make sure not everyone is a top performer... The distribution needs to be normal with outliers dealt with. Sorry you were slow to the concept.
