Thread regarding SAS Institute layoffs

SAS pulling the plug on certain regions . . .

Welp. Was checking my email and just got the news.

Whoever predicted that things have been a little too quiet recently was right on the money.

It's a shame, I've worked with many developers and testers from the region and have been helped countless times by them. For me this comes as a huge shock and honestly makes me pretty sad..

Hoping everyone will get along fine over there.. but damn

I'm not the OP. But Hong Kong remains open. This only affected mainland China.

@OP

Is the office in Hong Kong also closed, or still open?

While the industry will never be the same, it will eventually need new creative and capable architects, designers, developers, and testers - once the limitations of AI become all too apparent. In the meantime, usability and quality will suffer if the AI vibe workers do not have and employ critical thinking skills. The pendulum will swing, it’s just a matter of time and clearing of the AI fog.

@yb It’s like you are just saying random things without any knowledge.

All of these had RD layoffs this year…
Intel
Microsoft
Amazon (Alexa, AWS)
Dell
Meta
Alphabet
IBM
Salesforce

The list is very long

I can’t see this being geopolitically based unless it was based on events that happened months ago. The timing with Trump and Xi meeting was coincidental. The decision to close an office is not something that was done last week or even last month. This was a months long process. Notifications have to be made to the local government. Anytime you work with government entities there are going to be lawyers involved. That means lots of time. From a fiscal standpoint, I believe the SAS fiscal year follows the calendar and ends December 31. I’m not an accountant, but I bet there are benefits to doing it now from a financial standpoint. This has more to do with money than politics.

Who provided more value? The employees in China who were laid off, or the employees in the Art Department, which is safe?

@gk “ These positions were eliminated because SAS is dying. Their loss is not our gain.”

I agree the jobs aren’t coming back to Cary. But your reason for why it happened is a serious stretch. Did all the other tech companies that have recently closed operations in China also do it because they were dying?

Are we thinking that other R&D offices (Glasgow, Pune) are also in danger?

These jobs aren't coming back to the United States under any circumstances. These positions were eliminated because SAS is dying. Their loss is not our gain.

Is this enough to get a WARN report, or does it not count because the layoffs are in China? Crafty CEO!

I hear there was a severance package at least. So hopefully you all will be able to find new opportunities soon, or if you're closer to retiring, will enjoy retirement peacefully.

I know the job market in China is also quite bad right now, so will be thinking of you all. Best of luck friends <3

Yes,we are R&D plug on certain region. we have been waiting here all this time just to see this day — to see those incompetent and morally corrupt GM and directors finally run out of places to go. We developers and testers can still find our own way.

No big surprise. After all, most of the SAS Regional offices in the USA are gone.

Alot of fat can be cut at EMEA.

I agree that the US job market needs to take better care of it's own, especially with how difficult it's become for young college grads to find suitable jobs (coming from a college grad that joined not too many years ago).

Surely we can all agree just how, I don't know, absurd this is? Absolutely no notice whatsoever, at least to us developers and testers. No chance to say goodbye, no knowledge sharing, no "thanks for all the years of working with us"??

Just yesterday I was chatting with one of my colleagues about a problem we were having and how he would help me debug and triage the issue. Now I don't even have a way to contact him anymore??

Don't forget just last year we were reportedly "expanding business interests" in China: https://www.chinadailyhk.com/hk/article/583584.

Not to put on a tinfoil hat but I would venture political pressures caused this exit.

Jeez.. this su-ks.

“ And the latest present from Mr Cheeto is that our colleagues in China are losing their jobs!”

I’m not a fan of the president but tell me how SAS closing China operations is related.
There was no reason given.

Give me concretes that back up your assertion. Not speculation or hand waving.
