Took Buyout for 5/1/25 , Laptop Return

I remember being told prior to 5/1 that boxes would be sent to our laptops. I haven't received anything. I'm considering selling it. Who has sent a laptop back or can it be sold?

I would not do that. Security will notice and reach out to the manager eventually. I have seen law enforcement get involved when the laptop is not returned.

After 6 months, reformat to factory settings, bo-m free laptop for your trouble.

If you don’t live there far from an office, I would drop it off or call HR

Having the same issue. I’ve reached out 4 times to a former director advising I’ve not received boxes since discharged in May due to buyout. Each time they advised an outreach to the appropriate contact was done and my boxes are on the way. 6 months later nothing. Personally I consider it abandoned. I did my part.

Leader forgot to send your boxes. Please just let someone/anyone know. You do NOT want to sell it. Please.

I would recommend letting someone know that you haven’t received boxes for your laptop maybe your last supervisor or even call employee center. I wonder if maybe it went to an old address or something. A friend of mine didn’t receive a box for her laptop and many months later she received outreach from Optum requesting the equipment and potential next steps if it isn’t received.

Also for the sake of even the smallest piece of PHI you could do a lot of damage to a member if you sold it, so please consider that.

Odd they send me a box to send mine back toward the end of May. I wouldn't sell it as it doesn't feel appropriate.

Most likely from that timeframe the OS is Windows 10 which is out of support so the paperweight is worthless.

@dw After 6 months, it's on nobodies radar. No company in their right mind is going to try to sue someone over returning something worth likely under $500. They're not even going to send scary letters from lawyers for that amount.

The thing needs to be wiped though. The last thing you want is some viral story on social media about how someone found a United Health Group laptop on ebay that state "It's unknown at this time if the laptop contained any health records".

That’s really strange. I took the buyout and got my boxes. In the past when employees would be on leave, get a new computer, or would be let go I would get emails if the computer wasn’t connecting to the network or returned promptly. I’m surprised yours fell through the cracks unless your manager also left and the follow up emails aren’t going anywhere. If the manager doesn’t respond to them after a certain number of reminders it gets escalated up the chain and to corporate security. I would just call HR and tell them that you need the boxes and they will probably just have a BSL trigger for you.

I would avoid keeping, if there is even a little PHI. You never know. Also, if a severance agreement was signed, you may need to pay them back for it based on the language.

Send them a note and a bill for storage.

I suggest dropping it off at your local UHG office for the sake of your own risk mitigation. CYA

After 6 months of them not asking for the thing back, many would consider it abandoned property.

If you severance has already run out, there's little they can really do if you don't return it. At the very least you should wipe the thing so nobody claims there's double-secret company information on the thing.
