Word is some who survived in NY Corporate got retention bonuses basically saying they will be laid off in the future. If you’re in Corp NY make sure you get a piece of that pie !

I think you're confused. A retention bonus is given to anyone who the company sees as "bus factor risk". i.e. they've laid off so many people, they only have a small number of people to do the actual work anymore. So if that person sees the writing on the wall and jumps ship... that'd be VERY bad because the company is extra-ordinarily vulnerable.
It doesn't mean they're gonna get canned in X months. And in fact that person is likely less likely to get axed as the company sees them as a key person risk.
