@ak No, legally no can't
Well lets be honest, there is collosal oversupply of talent globally in tech. Everyone in the West Coast of USA should be fired and re-hired at 1/2 their salary to bring the value in line with the global costs. This will reduce COL in west US to something sustainable and fix many issues.
Try to identify who are H-1B in your org / team . You can sue if they still retain the position after your layoff.
Why housing market returns if amzn stock returns?
Housing market depends on local job market.
Not all amzn share holders live in Seattle area.
We don’t need all those H1B visas if this pans out!
If the layoffs really happen this week, hopefully someone writes an open letter calling for Andy Jassy to step down right away. If Amazon is seriously planning to cut 30K jobs just a few years after laying off 27K and then hiring a bunch of people again, there’s no reason he should still be running the company.
the job market is already bad - we are about to be competeing with 30K more.
amazon has too many employes, Microsft and Apple have much smaller CORP teams. Amazon has around 350k workers, which is huge, if growth slows they may shrink to 200k-250k in a few years. right now about 60k work in seattle... that # could drop by around 10k, of the 30k total cuts 3k-4k will likley come from seattle. this will slow the housing market and it may stay flat for about a year, fewer people will want to buy homes in the seattle area, when amazon’s stock rises again demand will return. the situation is worse than the 2023 layoffs, the job market is much weeker now. microsoft will also start cutting jobs slowly and the seattle housing market will cool for at least a year after the bo-m from 2020 to mid-2025.
@OP dayummmmm!
