Has anyone noticed how the vast majority of the firings this year have been people over 40? Is anyone still in touch with these people? Wondering if any of them have contacted the EEOC.

Over 40 years old is a protected class. If they fire you and tell you it was due to “performance” but refuse to go into any detail (because it’s not true), I would suggest NOT accepting the severance that they offer and hiring an employment lawyer to write them a strongly worded letter threatening to sue for discrimination. They WILL negotiate your severance package.
@rf Yes. This won’t save you if someone in leadership decides to bully your department. They do that. Take the money. They owe it to you.

It's all about the $$$$$$$ and the power, bring $$$$ and pleas your so called leaders, you will do fine at Appian.
Maybe not ageist, but they want to grow talent from within because it’s cheaper. External hires tend to have the market knowledge and therefore command a better pay. They tend to be seasoned and older too. So it’s inevitable that once someone homegrown reaches the same level but at 20-30% less cost because they don’t know any better, the old hand moves on realising the growth isn’t there for them. It’s always money, it’s just sad that the home grown that show the loyalty are essentially exploited
Age discrimination. Yes. Failing strategy. Yes. Horrible leadership. Yes. $$$ paid out. Yes.
The older folks are more expensive to keep. It's always about money —and who you know.
This is likely accurate. MC’s consistent stated preference for hiring college students and growing them from within always smelled to me as extremely clear age discrimination. They have a clear preference for younger people, so honestly, yes, this tracks.
Appian is a horrible company, but highly doubtful they're engaging in age discrimination.
