Salaries

Why do some people say XOM employees are overpaid and some say we are underpaid compared to other oil companies? Which one is it?

If you can get away or have a position that you can put in only 40 to 45 hours per week the pay is great. In reality to be competitive at exxon you have to do much more. I was putting in 60 hours and still was ranked low. I was told at my cl and pay band that more was expected of me. Let's do the math say 200k per year at 60 hours per week equals about 64 per hr, now say 150k per year at 40 hour per week is 75 per hour. So even working your a off is not enough. The worst part is the physiological torture exxon uses against you. If my math is off it is because I am an exxon engineer. Well i don't work more than 42 hour a week anymore and I have fallen into ni territory. I was warned that I will soon be nsi. When I am I will retire. Remember money isn't everything as your mental health is priceless. I know several employees out on mental health issues right now. They cracked under the constant pressure. There rankings have dropped and they can't handle it.

Nobody at ExxonMobil is overpaid. The Exxon legacy is ," we are a pain in the azz to work for, but we pay best in the industry". Still a pain in the azz, but pay and benefits are eroding. Now they are striving to be mediocre in all respects, low level offshore workforce, benefits, pay, morale, etc..

XOM has paid well in my experience with the company, I worked in the asset SYU which was sold to Sable and get paid much better with them.
I did work some special projects and was paid well but a lot of my peers were kind of sc--wed when the asset was sold.
Unfortunately we’re just a number to them

Salary spread is really wide - you rank well you’re well compensated, rank in the middle or below… not so much.

If you’re working 60-70 hours a week, you start to question if it makes more sense to earn a higher salary at a job that expects you to work additional hours (like consulting). People may be thinking per hour they are not paid well compared to other options.

Also, someone may look at their peers/managers who seem to not be putting in the same effort and then consider them overpaid.

I think we are one of if not the top paid in the Permian from what I’ve heard from other companies.

I think XOM employees are still well paid regardless of where you are. You are paid a lower salary in TC's but they are paid very well in their respective countries.

I think the "underpaying" is more a relative speak. Work used to be done by higher CL level are now done by lower, thus paid less for same work. Pay raise also not as generous as it used to be, and with high inflation, some of us are getting paid reduction in terms of buying power.

Because leadership ain’t transparent about the benchmarks. So until they are we are free to speculate
