The total of almost 11k didn't apply to everyone unfortunately. Yes it does matter what your pay rate is, craft, union affiliation, and everything else that can affect your pay like your location. It's nearly impossible to calculate backpay down to one universal number for everyone. The number they listed was a gross estimate that didn't account for some taxes that some states have and some states don't. Also look and see for other amounts taken out. If you see an amount that was taken out that you don't recognize, question it! Talk to an accountant that's familiar with tax withholdings. If your withholdings from your backpay are very close to half of what you actually, then I'd definitely be asking some questions.
