PS. I also wanted to thank @vx for taking the time to reply with kindness and thoughtfulness. Other responders on here take glee in kicking others when they are down.

Not sc--wed. It was nothing but an innocent rescheduling to Monday from a 1:1 that typically happens on a different day.

So, are you sc--wed?

At least you get to see the axe falling. During 2020 Covid, my manager just called me at 7AM while I was showering for work and left a message to call him back.

I called him back knowing that it wasn’t going to be a good conversation. I was a junior engineer at the time. Only had two years of experience. I had a lot of emotions after the call: “What do I do? Why do I feel I am getting backstabbed? Why don’t they layoff older staff or contractors first? How can I get a new job with only two years of experience during a time where practically no one is hiring? Should I move back with my parents? How am I going to afford rent?” Funny thing is, when I left, two or three engineers volunteered to quit. That organization no longer exists at HPE and there’s only one product that is still being made in that product line.

But now I’m a senior engineer at a smaller company. I don’t look back. Big tech is a good springboard for college graduate careers but not a good place to say for long. If you’re too comfortable with your job at HPE, it’s likely because you’re not challenging yourself and probably letting someone else do the heavy lifting in India or Taiwan.

There’s good news for laid off: they pay you a lot of money to leave and if you’re able to get a new position elsewhere outside of HPE within a month or two, you basically win by getting a lot of money and a better job.

Here’s my advice when or if you get laid off: don’t panic, don’t apply to new jobs right away, take a few days off to process what happened because it is stressful, and reevaluate your skills and experiences to write that on your resume. Don’t panic while applying for jobs. Yes, it’ll feel weird and maybe a little embarrassing while filling out applications and interviewing but put yourself in a mindset that you’re entering a new chapter in life and your next job will be better for you, your family, etc. It’s a fresh new start. This all happened because you weren’t where need to be and your next company will be far more supportive. Yes, you will miss your colleagues at HPE but you won’t miss your management or the company itself.

Good luck. Take time for yourself. Enjoy your unpaid vacation with the severance money you’ll make. Have a glass of wine.

@OP The time to worry is when you get a meeting invite for a 1:1 with your manager's manager.

I don’t get it , is it an out of the blue 1-1? I mean you should have a sense of whether you (and your dept.) are adding value to the combined enterprise. Unless you’re like 25 or something.

@cv I had regular 1:1 with my HPE leader on Mondays and it simply made it easier to schedule the WFR convo. I would prepare for the potential discussion and if it doesn’t happen the no worries.

Don’t you have regular 1:1s with your manager? If not, yes you are gone. If you can’t take the pressure of meeting with your boss regularly then you should be gone.
