Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

AI bubble article

https://www.theatlantic.com/economy/archive/2025/09/ai-bubble-us-economy/684128/

This is a long read so you have been warned up front. Those with ADHD/ADD take your adderal first and don't complain.

Good article talking about a potential AI bubble impact comparable to the Internet bubble impact from 2000-2002. The companies that are investing billions in AI research and data centers aren't seeing the return on investment they expected. Actual impacts of AI to the workforce haven't been as great as the media reports.

Maybe not having a core dependence on AI might benefit Intel if they can stay focused on fixing the manufacturing issues and stay in business long enough.

AI is just another promise, like Elon's self driving cars.
Startups are scamming investors getting money and not producing anything of value.

@da its hard to find a way to put a glass half full spin on anything Intel has done for the last quarter century.

Yes, it's lucky for Intel they already failed at AI, so they won't be affected much by the crash. They're also pretty immune to downturns in Mobile, GPU, and all the other markets they failed in.

@cq You're not wrong. The author makes the rookie mistake of equating "the economy" with indices like the S&P 500:

"What makes the current situation distinctive is that AI appears to be propping up something like the entire U.S. economy. More than half of the growth of the S&P 500...."

Not to mention the back-peddling when looking back at the subheadline. We go from, "The entire U.S. economy is being propped up..." to "...AI appears to be propping up..."

Got it.

@OP thanks. I'm already skeptical it'll be worth my time based on the subhead, "The entire U.S. economy is being propped up by the promise of productivity gains that seem very far from materializing." Seems like a ridiculous assertion, but I'll give it a read.
