That surpassed even the most optimistic scenario, no thanks to super expensive public cloud hyper scalers who got greedy.

That statistic is total bull. Only 10% are still actually using VCF as a platform, but 90% are now paying for it. Total trash evil company.
They were discounting the heck out of VCF and limiting or not giving discounts on any of the other bundles for months now.
Those customers who have asked partners for quotes for Ent+ or Standard are basically being told that it's not being quoted, or the quote is just never produced. Some are told they can't go past v8 with anything but VCF.
So many of the partners that I talk to have said they sold customers VCF not because that's what the customer wanted, but that's what was discounted the most. They are buying just to get a 3 year window to figure out what to do that doesn't involve VMware in the future (or at least diversify their environment and risk exposure by putting workloads somewhere else).
Following your metaphor, at BRCM, all that matters is they PAID for MS Office w a 5yr contract. Don't care if they using PPT. Revenue and Profit beats even adoption. There always a next-thing to acquire and sell anyway.
Just because they have MS Office license does not mean all employees are using Power Point.
Just because they are using VCF licenses doesn't mean they have VCF deployed.
