Unless you are an executive who has a direct influence on your company's stock price, you really shouldn't be holding much of your employer's stock anyway - if the company goes south, you lose your investment AND your job. If you made money on dish/echostar and were laid off, count yourself lucky and walk away.
For someone to make millions from the stocks means that they had invested at least $500k in Echostar stock either through profit sharing or Emplyee Stock Purchase or their own individual portfolio. Only execs would do this. For you to make 250k (meaning you had around $125k invested) tells me you are either a exec or have served at the company for 20+ years to have that much money. Please don't make it seem like you are one of the unfortunate ones - you're rich.
