I wonder how the recently laid off employees were selected. Were the targets those with lower performance, older age or those with higher pay?

Is correct. If you are a white male you are all but gone. Not just here but at nearly every tech company for that matter.
They use machine learning.
Generally speaking, HR composes a list to prevent the company from getting sued. Nothing personal, but your personal value only matters to the extent that they don't get sued. Other than that, "Next in line!"
Managers are informed of what will come. Percentages are relayed. Heads are placed in buckets. Older white, male, expensive. Protect those not named above. Little time is given to decide. Insider info.
