A 3 to 1 subordinate to “manager” ratio is beyond obscene from an efficiency perspective. I have never worked in a creative high technical organization where my span of control was less than 6 people. Tech companies at 3 to 1 should be targeting ratios of 6 to 1 or even higher. That would be a 50%-60% cut in management staff.
