Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

For those who get laid off, what's stopping one to just not return their computer/phone?

If I were to be laid off, I'd return them but unwillingly. I have 2 systems from Dell, a corporate phone, and a few other items issued to me. I know for a fact that Dell can simply de-activate your machine's access to VPN's and such and it wouldn't exactly be difficult to wipe the computer clean and start fresh, if you wanted to.

The two systems I have are likely worth a combined $1100 at MOST. The phone is an iphone 10x, which obviously would have it's service cut but, you could theoretically put service onto it yourself (out of your pocket.) That phone is worth maybe 150.. The other device I have is worth closer to 1k I think and is the only thing I'd want to keep if possible. I'd say only about 100 people in the entire company have this device. I'd tell you what it is but I'd give myself away as to what org I'm in and what department I'm in..

But, what if a laid off person was to just not return their computer, badge, etc...?

@1cf I've wiped, removed the serial/service tag, and sold every Dell issued laptop and desktop that I have been given since 2006. Never had a problem.

Whoever sold a corp issue laptop is d-mber than dirt. If the buyer calls support, you will get busted.

if your severance is too good to buy new things, give them what they ask you to bring, if not, ask them gently if you can keep something that you would like to keep ( laptop or monitor ) and wait their answer.

Why bother? The cr-p you mentioned isn’t worth much anyway. In a year or two it’ll be totally worthless. Macs are WAY better anyway. Get yourself a nice new one. You want to be marked as rehire-able. I know some will claim they would never work for Dell again anyway but you don’t know what the future holds. Dell could buy other companies that you might want to work for. If you work in the channel you won’t be able to avoid them. Don’t burn bridges—especially for pennies.

I returned the laptop. Kept the monitor, dock, and everything else. Never heard a peep about it and got my full Severance.

@e3 Funny.... the ones I have wiped and installed a new OS on don't try to connect to Dell. How would it even know to do that?

You can’t reimage your laptop with windows anyway. Even if you use a generic windows 11 usb stick it will connect to Dell servers and ask you to login with your Dell domain and who wants an old iPhone / android anyway?

Keep the items. They are probably worth more then the bonus they promised.

Severance is held hostage unless you return it. Plus why would you want to keep it?

Not sure how or works when you are layed off, but I have been with dell for 17 years, got a new laptop and/or desktop every few years and have not returned any of them with zero consequences. I kept my lenovo from 2015, its still running like a champ. The others I have wiped and sold.

Part of the problem with a free laptop is that it's a DELL laptop.

Turn it in and keep your severance so you can buy something without the D word on it.

If you don’t want your severance, hang on to that $500 brick of a Latitude. Winning!

Don’t lower yourself to match their behavior, you’re called to something higher. Don’t let offense, bitterness, or unforgiveness take root and harden your heart. Every choice you make carries consequences, not just for you but for those around you. Protect your character. Lead by example. Be the one who chooses love over hate, grace over pride, and peace over chaos.

I enjoyed pocketing 6 months of pay after I started my new job after about 2 months. Not playing ball is a good way to get your severance recalled with a payback demand.
