Thread regarding Occidental Petroleum Corp. layoffs

Jobs are hard to come by these days..

Been looking for a change and there is nothing out there. I have many friends that put in applications all day long and get nothing. Anyone having any luck with petro-tech jobs? It is not only this industry as well, buy seems to be across the board.

They should go back to newspaper ads only and require a typed cover letter and resume. Then the applicant has to either mail it through USPS or fax it. This method really does weed out the lazy ones who aren’t qualified. The young people would be surprised how we got jobs last century.

@323 During my time at the company, I hired several employees at technical roles thru online posting alone. You have to know how to quickly weed out the ones that don’t qualify. I hired several through networking too.

I've been on the other side of the table. There's a lot of trash in the candidate pool, and it can be difficult to discern who is good based upon resume & interview alone.

Most teams fill 100% of their experienced hire needs through network. Good people (even now) have not challenges finding good roles, as they have former colleagues willing to vouch for them.

Online postings are largely compliance and a convenient way to broadcast to network that you're looking for somebody. An experienced hire naive enough to expect a job through online posting alone... is exceptionally naive and lazy.

Many have requested my expertise in the past, but only a few have been worthy of receiving it. I’m afraid that you’re PART of the many and not the “few”. However, I am more than “happy” to continue to discuss punctuation marks with you here in Wonderland if you want to.

Quotation marks have several functions in grammar and a direct citation is but just one.

And to @yn

For what it's worth:

This forum does not allow for font effects such as italics, bold or underlining, so CAPS (or quotation marks) is really the only way to add emphasis.

And this is an internet "complaint" forum, not an internal email/memo that is going to be circulated within the company or all the way up to them BOD. So, people are just shooting from the hip with their posts.

But for someone that wrote/lectured:

“. . . you don’t see too many experienced employees capitalizing words in their business emails, unless they are just out of college”

Well, . . . you should realize that experienced employees are not “just out of college.”

Can you provide a link to your sanctimonious, condescending TED Talks presentation on business communications?

It would be most helpful and informative for many of us who lack you expertise.

@x8 could be. Or it could be an attempt to add importance to words that are simply not that important. Why emphasize sad, many, or anyone?

Business communication includes words that are important or weighty, but you don’t see too many experienced employees capitalizing words in their business emails, unless they are just out of college.

Secondly, capitalizing words unnecessarily does not add weight as much as it adds emotion. It’s like yelling in print. So learn how to tap down your emotion, and communicate ideas instead of feelings. In other words, write like an adult, not a teenager.

Why do I have to teach you such things?

@vt it’s call emphasizing a world to add weight. Why would an adult who is supposedly educated need to ask that? If you need that explaining perhaps you need to look at yourself instead of the repeated deflection questions.

Its the only position and company you people can get. Ive never known ANYONE leave Oxy and regret it.

I have seen many MANY people drop out of real companies and join Oxy though.

Stay with Oxy if you are compensated well even if you don’t like all aspects of the job. All too often people leave their jobs only to discover a new employer and job situation isn’t as good as Oxy. Also if you are going to a smaller company you are increasing the risk of being laid off. Now if you are on a PIP then by all means leave for greener pastures.
