In July 2025, Illinois companies reported 444 mass layoffs. LSC Communications Transport in Bolingbrook, also known as Enru Logistics, accounted for 180 of those cuts, with permanent layoffs set for Sept. 5. LSC, formerly part of RR Donnelley, was sold in 2024, with most mailing operations sold earlier this year, but the Bolingbrook center excluded from that deal.
TreeHouse Foods Inc. closed a Chicago facility, cutting 80 jobs. Overall, 310 layoffs came from downsizing, 80 from closures, and 54 were unspecified. About 87% of these cuts are permanent.
Under Illinois’ WARN Act, employers with 75 or more employees must report mass layoffs, though filings don’t fully reflect broader economic health. The report notes Illinois’ challenging business climate, citing the nation’s highest property taxes, among the highest corporate income taxes, and a steep unemployment insurance tax rate.
