Thread regarding NetApp layoffs

NetApp is more about experience than growth

If you are starting your career, NetApp can be a solid place to pick up knowledge for a few years - IF you can avoid being laid off. Most of the engineering team is older, so upward movement is very limited. Promotions are rare and big raises even rarer, but the experience you gain can really boost your resume. Use the time to sharpen your skills and learn from seasoned engineers while you can.

Depends on the group, but I would not recommend a person new in their career, or any stage, to join some groups. Not even just for experience, but I agree with your point growth isn't a good reason as well. Cloud development group is an example where I would actively discourage an individual to apply to.

There the entire org processes and environment are not suitable for a junior developer to learn strong foundational skills and it is difficult to manage for experienced devs. There is no mentoring because no one has time to help with anything that isn't assigned. Every initiative is urgent and moved left to maximize unlocking immediate high value sale opportunities. This does not include time to invest in the next generation of developers and gets trimmed off the schedule or assumed to be part of overhead. We have no time for overhead that isn't already filled with meetings and other process in any hope to meet top down driven and non negotiable deadlines.

It has been this case even before the double down to accelerate all initiatives for the 10B revenue executive directive, recently it has become even worst. I hear the same complaints even outside of the Cloud Orgs.

It is hard for me to believe NetApp is a good resume padder to find a better company, but for those of us looking to move on I hope it is true.

TL;DR
I do not recommend any junior/new developer to apply to NetApp with a reasonable expectation of good a experience and I doubt it is a good resume padder. The company priorities does not support your healthy career growth, skill growth, or enable senior developers time to mentor you. Your experience will not be applicable to a well ran development organization.
