I'm curious what other transitional role folks strategy is. Having been through this before and a really tight job market, I personally am going to try to network my way into a new role long before my end date. I know June seems a while off, but it really isn't especially if you consider how glacially slow HR is. It took six months from first contact to first day here.... Just curious.

@dz By starting 5 years ago. Documenting, for yourself, your accomplishments as you go along — so you can write your CV more specifically. Be active in your professional society. Both training and service. Read professional literature religiously. The past is the past, start now preparing for the next downturn.
@f3 Don't forget to add the extra 1500 BP just announced they are adding to the original 4500 they are planning to let go this year!
The market outlook for geologists and engineers is getting worse by the week. Good luck getting an past AI bots, inept HR drones and hundreds of other candidates competing for the same few job openings.
Agreed, time to dust off relationships. Remember though everyone knows everyone in this industry, try and be amicable with everyone you speak to. You never know who knows who….
Critical flaw with this plan is that there are zero and less openings at companies every day that goes by. It’s time to think outside of your comfort zone and start planning on a career that’s different from what you planned/hoped for.
@dz You call everyone you ever had a good working relationship with at other companies, offer to take them to lunch and ask if they know of any roles opening up. It's basically the old fashioned way of putting OPENTOWORK on your LinkedIn profile. Way more effective though. Way, way more effective at smaller companies where the HR department is non existent. I've helped people land roles this way and have been helped into roles this way.
How do you network into a new job?
