Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

This is the reality of AI at Dell

so, as developers, we're being scolded for not using AI to its fullest potential. All we really have is Codeium in our IDE's. AI is new for some of us so we're willing to use it, but how...tell us how...tell us what you want. We ask for training. Nope, no budget for training other than basic elementary what is AI type of courses. So, you want AI but don't want to train us. It's up to us to take the time to learn AI, which isn't terrible, but it is on our own dime and time which we'll never be reimbursed for or appreciated in a raise. I would have thought that if Dell claims to be an AI company, they would have a much clearer idea as how to use it or what their intentions would be. Even the managers know that we're being forced to use it with no training or now guidance as to how to use it. Best bet is to learn it on your own and gain the skills and then leave Dell.

100% agreement on Dell Sales Chat. They have been working on this for a few years. The problem is that you don't know if the answers are accurate or not.

When pushed by management, I responded with, do you want me to send these answers out as is? Management said check it. So now, do i need to do more research? Doesn't this defeat the purpose of Dell Sales Chat? I am assuming they want us to go into overdrive to test the thing so that it will become accurate.

Sales chat is average at best, the answers are almost always wrong. Dell have a data issue, garbage in / garbage out. Thats what happens when you run the company in silos that don’t work well with one another

what I've been doing is starting from scratch with my paid LLMs I subscribe to, on my personal custom built tower (which is much faster than my Dell latitude anyway), I have an entirely separate environment with visual studio code, postgres SQL, node, etc.. I develop the entire thing outside of Dell, on my personal system, then, to meet my job requirement I will later 'gift' Dell my code, more like my idea as I didn't write most of it, still my IP, made on my own without using any Dell data or Dell proprietary info, developed in the evenings outside working hours, so Dell has zero claim to it legally at this point, then I'll zip it up, throw it on my personal website and download to Dell, it's a ridiculous work around, but it's the only way I can get my work completed on schedule.

Obviously we all know how to use all those tools. The bottom line is the PO's responsible for the backlog are not adding AI epics and stories. For some reason, it has to be developer drive which makes me wonder why they're getting rid of developers but keeping all the various levels of POs around who are relatively clueless to the technology. I don't see PO's doing research.

@a7 try 5 times a day according to our local country leader.
Metrics around this and other tools seem to change each week

The Oracle Minarch project will give us a leg up w the interconnected suite. It should have a positive impact in reducing costs in a lot of places from what I hear. Has anyone heard the implementation dates?

Take every AI course and test available at Dell.
Your future employers will be looking for it.

I’m on the cusp of retirement and it seems to be that people without a working knowledge of AI tools and a positive attitude towards it are like people in the late 80s and early 90s who were smart, educated, and competent in their fields but wanted nothing to do with personal computers.

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I would use this time to get yourself trained up on AI. Not for Dell but for you and your future. Yes, many of us will be replaced by AI - this is eat or be eaten time. Me, I have taken some classes, trying to up my skills. But I'm an old guy and will be retiring soon anyway.

Sales has been told we have to use Dell SellsChat at least once a day, and if we do not, our names will be on "a list".

You're only scratching the surface of how poorly Dell handles AI and LLMs. They're fully committed to Oracle to save them, but to me, it seems like their approach will be outdated the day it's released.
