Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

hot to survive this s...tshow

Heritage Pioneer here. Had my performance review this week (hPXD manager). I was rated “good” (was told its “ok”, whatever it means, I’m yet to find out). Some of my hPXD coworkers were rated NI. Just for doing their regular work at “Excellent”. This is so unhuman and unfair. How am I suppose to motivate myself to do my best?

And all to your smart a…ses, I’m not asking for an obvious advise to quit. Do better and engage your brain cells in giving some practical advice.

@af
Outstanding this year, same as last. It’s a formula that works. I know it’s BS and I could be doing a lot more to add actual value. But I like my paycheck and it pays for my family and outside interests so I continue to play the game.

the funny part is to be liked you have to be an id--t. because the ones in these positions are crazies who have played dirty politicsx backstabbed their colleagues, lied all their lofe and hence made managers.

thats the price you have to pay to do well in assessments - sell your soul to id--ts. even the devil is vetter than an id--t.

@ae appreciate the advice. I just got PIP’d w/ NI. Didn’t even realize it was a possibility for hPXD people this year.

Once you realize the rankings are based off of how well your boss and coworkers like you instead of how well you perform your job is when you start to understand how messed up this place really is.

Between the December hPXD PA and this one I went from O to VG. During same period my work output/demand increased.

You will have to play the game if you want to survive. Don’t fight it, we all know it’s BS, just play it.

Find out what things your boss cares most about because s/he promised their boss to deliver on those this year- and work on those as your highest priority. It doesn’t matter if they really matter more, make them your priority anyway.

Choose your KOs based on who likes you the most + who has a higher CL and likely higher ranking. Make sure you do good things for those KOs especially in Q1 of the year so they remember your recent wins and give you good feedback.

Pick a random thing that’s achievable to improve, and improve it on your own without someone asking, so you can check the “goes above and beyond” box.

Volunteer on some committee or extra-curricular event - there are many time-waster groups to choose from such as ERGs, United Way, culture team, etc. You must be seen as having a positive impact in the culture. I choose something that takes as few hours as possible but still checks the box.

Join some working committee or group that is not inside your own work group, to be shown as having outside influence in the broader company- there are many to choose from but can be tricky to get yourself on. Example- could be the “Innovation Council” in EMTEC or one of the Enterprise standards teams, or maybe an industrial conference or standards organization. Again I recommend choosing something with minimal effort required but still checks the box.

The grand Exxon game has changed in recent years- the last piece of the game now is to show support and positivity towards some sort of low-cost centre / tech center / offshoring initiative. Again there are many to choose from - work ported to BTC/KL, procurement doing BBI, Projects doing DTI….

Welcome to the show! May the odds be ever in your favor.

@ab so then why NSI them?

High offers were given to PXD out of desperation. There are/were not enough people to run that asset and it is difficult to find good people who want to work here.

Hi friend, there is no practical advice to give. You survived for another year but ranked "good" possibly to set you up for NSI next year. It is a failed system and would likely be a failing company if not for some insane strokes of luck. You have some time now to plan an exit strategy, best to let the rest fight for scraps in the sh!thole they've created for one another.

Why did Exxon give such high offers to hPXD?

Due to high pioneer salaries many pioneer people came it at cls higher than their xom equivalents. This puts pioneer people in cl assessment groups that are impossible to survive because they can't possibly compete against the xom people that are better ntworked and positioned to deliver impactful business results. Enjoy making more money than your xom boss while it lasts. You've probably got 2 years to go.

I take care of my people and don’t worry about my rankings anymore. I’m now only here for the money and I am just counting down till 55.

You can’t be disappointed if you don’t care. Works for me.

Honestly, welcome to XOM. PXD got duped. The XOM network of "untouchables" is thick. For the rest of the unsponsored individual contributors it's not a matter of will it happen, its a matter of when will it happen (i.e., NSI and PIP). And if you think promotions are a good thing, think again. The higher you go up, the faster you get selected for sacrifice.
