Berk Hath has deep pockets but the railroad is out to be a bad asset as poor management and a weak workforce cripple the once profitable rr. Dont let them fool you into thinking they got it all together. A merger may smoke the competition out of the water and open the doors for great opportunities. The other guys are cowards who always watch the UP make the first move before they ease their toe into the water. I wouldnt sweat it- they are looking to a possible liquidation since their daddy is going out the door.

The difference between the deep pockets of the competition and poor old uncle pete, is the oracle of omaha CAN(!) afford to fix and bring his railroad up to par. Uncle pete cannot. If everything system wide had to brought up just to standard (not above standard) in one year, uncle pete’s stock would plummet to the price of a hamburger on a value menu.
Don't fool yourself into thinking that the other class 1's are the same as the UP either. You must not forget that the UP faced much more scrutiny when the past hearings took place and managed to squeak out a #1 worst employer in North America for four years in a row. No one said that the other class 1's got it together, but they are in fact performing better than the UP right now. I just don't see any merger involving the UP to go smoothly at all, especially with its current leadership team. The UP jacked up the last merger. Vena can't run the UP as it now. Do you really expect him to run the UP efficiently if they do acquire another class 1? I really doubt it! The other class 1's are just waiting for the UP to mess up right, so stay tuned!
