Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Trused source says 10% of the workforce, including 18% of Principal Engineers are on the list

Hint: If your mgr is avoiding 1-1s, no longer assigning you projects, no checkin reminders, etc...

All done. It is all about negotiations and shuffling almost until the last minute. Budgets have been set. Just minor tweaking within the budget and trading are left.

So the lists have been created?

Before layoffs, management tends to avoid group meetings and one on ones. This can affect everyone on the team but management is more likely to avoid one on ones if you are on the list.

You may not be assigned new work even if you are not busy. Your manager may be more pessimistic to you about your group's prospects. You may have more involvement from others on projects that you were working independently. There may be an absense of discussion on future projects and your career growth.

Usually, there is about one month between lists and notification so you may notice your management behaving differently toward you in this time. Usually, your manager will minimize contact with you and focus on existing work and not the future. He will not share a positive attitude about the group's future.

You might be getting managed out of your job if:

  1. Everything you do is suddenly micromanaged.
  2. You're being given impossible tasks with unrealistic deadlines.
  3. You're excluded from important meetings.
  4. Your responsibilities are reduced or shifted to less desirable tasks.
  5. Your achievements are ignored or downplayed.
  6. Reasonable requests for time off, training or resources are consistently denied without valid reasons.
  7. Your position or similar roles are being advertised externally.
  8. You're penalised for minor infractions others get away with.

yawn...if true, it's from a struggling org - not company wide.

Was LR'd by Cisco. Ended up with good feelings for the company and how it all went about. Many friends still there, and monitor this just to pickup news on movements of names, etc. But I feel I am qualified to give a few bullets if you suspect you may be affected at some point in future (I dont believe the monthly sky is falling and everyone is going to loose their jobs stuff).

  1. Your leader tries to bring in others to join you on key items you previously had been driving independently (which outwardly is a good thing)
  2. Any contacts and efforts with other internal and external groups are asked to loop in others
  3. Due to current workloads, sometimes others joining in are much lower level/just learning - as they may just be there to document some transition of work
  4. Things you are working may be actively transitioned so you can "focus on other key needs"
  5. You hear grapevine questions on if areas such as yours have any overlap, or are you just 1 in a box for the product you focus on? If you are 1 in a box, and that area will live on, usually much safer

I am sure there are more and others who passively listen in here just to keep the pulse (and ignore the heated trolls, and naturally angry people) may have more to add.

But what do I know? I was LR'd ;-) Cisco treated me fairly and ended up in great place!
