@c9 They're getting great severance pay though, negotiated by the union.

I worked in a union IT shop a looong time ago and it was a disaster. Morning and afternoon 10 minute coffee breaks were written into the contract (and they turned into 45 minutes every time). Overtime and off hours support were highly regulated. If your team was not enamored with a project, you could get it shutdown with typical union tactics. Innovation was non existent and projects that should have taken 6 months took 2 years. I hated working there with a passion.

You folks think that our IT is slow and bureaucratic now? Go look at a union shop and you will be disgusted.

If you think you're company is a problem, starting an union is not the answer. Then you'd just have two problems.

Well I beleive that it is extreme times like these when companies become too greedy and management becomes too inhuman and arrogant, then the need for union becomes absolutely necessary, absolutely support this , should be done quickly and with least Bureaucracy.

Nay for me. Unions only delays the inevitable. Look at Ford Europe, losing thousands of workers, even as they are unionized and protected by some of the toughest worker laws.

@OP While i support unions for people that put themselves in harms way aka Firefighter, Cops and Nurses. I've worked in Tech that had a union and it su-ked it destroyed productivity and basically became 100% bureaucratic .

People only got promoted because they were best friends with higher ups and separation of duties got so bad that you pigeon holed your career and was impossible to move to other teams to learn a new skill set in I.T.

Not only that part time workers like I.T. Help Desk had to pay dues and were not allowed any benefits of the union. While it did set a COLA standard. I can set my own wage. If I see i'm not getting paid the industry average, I go to my Boss and tell them i'm looking to get promoted or get a raise. If I get denied the pay raise or promotion I begin to look for another job simple as that.

While loyalty to a company used to be a thing especially for the original big 3, the Fortune 500 companies of today are not loyal to you. Their only goal is to make their Stock share go up If they are not new and innovating there only way to be prosperous is to either buy out smaller companies or to cut expenses. You are just an expense and they will cut you the moment the balance in their ledger is in the red and that CEO wants his bonus.

Engineering as well. This doesn't stop, it only gets worse. Our nation's prosperity has been slowly exported to low cost countries for a couple of decades now. It's just gotten much, much worse. With entire organizations also being imported, our futures and the futures of our sons and daughters are being destroyed. Raided for profit.

That's the main issue. The company treating it's employees like garbage is another. Expect zero trust, more surveillance, and more misery.

Unless it is stopped.
