Thread regarding PayPal layoffs

Are we done with layoffs for a while?

In all honesty, we can’t afford to lose anyone else. If they cut one more person, they may as well disband the whole team. There’s a limit to how much extra work we can take on, and we’re already leaning on that line. We can’t take any more, it’s as simple as that.

No, were not done. Lookup "$300m restructuring" to be completed by 2027. Restructuring means layoffs among other cost cutting (less severance..etc)

Thinking about how this culture of fear and mass layoffs happened. It’s really past the correction stage from pandemic over hiring and AI is not good enough to replace coders yet. What I c is just random layoffs and keeping people in fear with constantly overworked and stressed employees and desperate job seekers. It’s happening everywhere - random layoffs and then hiring.
Some people really wanted to be pharaohs and I feel like it’s happening.

My entire team was cut. Myself, my manager, their manager. All my direct reports. The team used 2 agencies to support - now they want to move the entire work to another agency. We evaluated that agency 3 times in the last 2 years and always ranked them at last because of the costs and their capabilities.

We were interviewed by another 3rd party consulting firm to evaluate roles and responsibilities 3 months ago. They came in with preconceived notions and sounded like they already knew what they wanted. They were tone deaf and hardly took any feedback about what is needed to grow.

Later I learnt it was a top down decision and everyone had to just comply (including the 3rd party consulting firm which was hired to give unbiased feedback - they just echoed what the management wanted to hear - took their paycheck and left)

I know everyone is replaceable (though pained on a personal front - not offended because I was cut) but not at the cost of the companies strategic capabilities.
