My Own Prison

They call it Return to Office, but it feels more like Return to Obedience. I went from thriving in autonomy to swiping a badge for appearances trading focus and flexibility for fluorescent lights and fake collaboration. It’s not a workplace anymore, it’s a performative cage. I didn’t sign up to be micromanaged through proximity I signed up to produce results. Welcome to my own prison.

Modern systems don’t always enslave bodies they enslave time, autonomy, financial freedom, and purpose. You don’t need a plantation when you have paycheck dependency, fear-driven culture, and leadership that talks about “values” while quietly gutting your career.

@cq

Absolutely right! But don't stop with just RTO. Let's roll everything back. Let's pull out all the electrical and plumbing. People flourished like that for decades. No more cars, just hop on your horse and trot on in. Worked just fine for Wyatt Earp.

We absolutely need to cling to the past in every possible aspect. it's the only path to true success.

"It has been proven that folks workiŋg from home work less than when focused in a working environment. Too many distractions when in a casual and comfortable environment with few timelines to prepare to get home like WFO"

Funny thing is in ISG we saw the exact opposite of this happen when the pandemic hit and they sent us home to work. Literally every metric used to measure our performance saw significant increases including customer satisfaction surveys. During the pandemic I was always early and didn't mind staying late since not commuting saves me about 1.5 hours a day. I rarely if ever had non work related discussions during my shift. Since RTO most if not all our performance metrics have sank below pre-pandemic levels. I am in the office exactly 40 hours a week and not one minute more. I start working as soon as I arrive and get a lot done for the first 3-4 hours then after that it's nothing but shooting the breeze with my coworkers, aka "face to face collaboration"

@cq Dell got rid of a bunch of real estate and consolidated offices. There literally is not enough room for folks to sit. Also, people are crammed in together and most are on calls. Before RTO, if there was an opportunity to work face to face, I went to office. It is not about being entitled, it is about where folks are them ost productive. If your team isnot in your work location, why does location matter. Anyway, I moved on.

If your commute isn't too long, just badge in and go back home like a LOT of people do... Or just stay for an hour, eat breakfast and go home again...

Though, I suppose it depends on your role and what org you are in.. I know the sales org has to stay in office from 9-5 (I believe anyways?) while other orgs - such as mine - dgaf if we just badge in and go straight back home. They just care about the badge swipes so they can report to their VP that they are "following protocols."

I don't get it... if it was OK to come to the office pre Rona then what changed?... you got 4 years of an easier time and saving on the commute. Entitled bunch of SOBs.

My favorite about RTO is having meetings and instead of getting meeting rooms we all stay in our offices or cubes. It’s unreal.

This company’s leadership is so poor it’s embarrassing.

RTO is "great". People talking at 85db. People eating at their desks like a hippo (close. Your. Mouth!!). People putting their feet on the desk. But. I'm George Costanza and won't leave until I get my redundancy

@a9 hmm. Smth tells me that a next great idea will be: "No time is more productive than from 9 to 5 and from the month of xxxx it will become mandatory to badge in at 9 and out at 5"

For my case I can get things done at home in a more efficient way, because I can replicate problems and offer a fix; this is something I can't do at work, I tried in the past and it just does not work for me.

I hear you, walking into these soul-su-king buildings day after day feels like nails on a chalkboard. I don’t know who these other weird posters are, but everyone I talk to can’t stand this place. You can hear them trying to convince themselves: “I’m more productive now!” Yeah, okay, but you’re not working a full day and still complain about the commute. Sure, buddy. We all know you’re just coasting and cutting into MD’s wallet with that half-baked effort. But keep playing Mr Tuff Guy.

Commute is probably the worst part for me. But honestly I feel more focused in the office vs home. I get more done in less time and can take off when ever. It is definitely not 9 to 5, so I won't complain.
